I love the idea of custom figures of your game characters but have you guys seen the WoW figureprints? 3D printing technology has a looooooooonnnng way to go before it's worth using for something like this.

Yup... in addition to printing the piece, you're going to need decent skill at painting the things. 3D printing with textures printed on them are not a cheap, or at good resolution for the average person right now.
Depends on the machine. If you are using a hobbiest machine lime a Makerbot then yes it can be difficult. If you have access to some of the machines I work on then you would not believe the detail I can get out of a machine. Granted, the machines I use are $250k - $750k. But there are services that can print a design for you using these machines, but I am unsure of the cost of that service.
If someone is really good in 3DS max (or whatever) and can get me the .stl file i can print one up and show everyone what it would look like.
I know a guy who did this with FFXI. He took the model out of Model Viewer and printed a statuette of his character using that. Very cool indeed.
I do remember reading an article once back in my ffxi days, and they would print out your character for you n ship it to you it was pretty expensive, but I loved the fact that they were so detailed I never did buy one though they charged a small fortune for them if I'm remembering right.
If you can provide a model there are several companies out there they will do a 3d print however they usually will stay away from anything game related because of copyright issues.
They would sell a LOT of figures at the right price and the right quality. People would not only order their avatars, but re order them in different gear.
I am ALL for this *throws money at screen* ^o^
And what about seasonal event based prints? I'm sure folks would buy any number of sets for friends and family that play
