You can’t justify it because it isn’t good or healthy gameplay. The folks that grind for hours on end with nothing to show for it are just addicted to the game. Try and take the drug away from the addict and they will get mad.

This.
The only problem is the percentual drop chance.
You have people that do 20 CEs and get their 18 demitatma. Then they come to the forums telling you how it's not that bad and that you can do it too - feeling super smart, while they only had incredible luck.
Then you have people like me (and you, supposedly) who do 20 FATEs and 20 CEs and have a whopping 1 demiatma to show for.
SE could easily ask us to bring 18*5=90 demiatmas and have every CE drop one. But no, we need to have RNG in it.
When you look at enough people doing it, it probably will even itself out at a rate of 1 demiatma per 5 CEs. But that doesn't help us when we're stuck on the wrong side of the bell curve.
If the content was fun at least, you would do it for fun, and gather the demiatma while you're playing. But as far as I could see, OC is nothing but a glorified FATE train in a no-flight zone. And just as much fun as this sounds.
I'll just sit this one out, as always. Next xpac the first NPC I talk to will give me a better weapon for taking item A to NPC B right left to them - 30 seconds compared to weeks and weeks of mindless grinding a non-fun zone for nothing to show in the end.
If you go 20 fates without getting one (its supposedly a 5% drop chance) it should keep increasing your chance to get it until you get one.
20 fates: 5% chance
21 fates: 10% chance
22 fates: 15% chance
etc
Are we sure these didn't break in some patch? I'm well over 100 fates closing in on 5 days grinding these both in the open world and Occult Crescent and have not yet gotten 1 single demiatma to drop. I have arcane artistry accepted and in my quest log. However, if it's really a 5% drop rate, heck even a 2% drop rate to go that long without seeing a single drop is bordering on powerball lottery level of odd.
Eureka crystals system is definitely superior. There's RNG in exactly how many drop, but you get a guaranteed drop at the end of the fight and can brute force your way through even with the worst RNG. If you missed NM timings for relic steps you can grind out more crystals and exchange them. There's no pity for demiatma.
Regarding the 100 fates and zero drops, you just happened to pull from a 0.5% chance among all the distribution you could have gotten.
For reference, chance for a single drop is 3%, two is 8%, three is 13%, four is 17%, five 18%.
Then it starts dropping down, six is 15%, seven is 10%... ten is 1%, past that is ridiculously low.
It's mathematical probability. Such rng means that someone is always bound to get the short straw, and that short straw seriously sucks especially when you're part of a small minority when the majority tells you that nope, everything was fine for them.
You could even have the player on the opposite side of the bell curve show up with a smile and tell you how they got 15 of them with 100 fates, which is in reality 0.001% chance to ever happen.
When I tried running fates outside of OC back then, I think I did about 30 of them, and got no drop. That had 21% chances to happen, and I was unlucky.
Now that you tried CEs, from your seven CEs not dropping a single one, it's a 20% probability to happen. Bad luck again.
If you mean this as a suggestion, then yes, that'd be nice. If you mean this as it's how it works, then no, that's called the gambler's fallacy. Your odds don't go up with every dice roll or coin flip, it's always the same chance. You see this a lot in D&D and other dice based games. People just rolling 1's and 2's all night. We like to think our chances will get better, but sadly they don't. There will be some people who will go months without finishing the first step, running hundreds of fates and CEs, because their rolls never break the 80%/95% fail state.
The drop rate isn't really that bad compared to DT Extreme mount drops. You're not supposed to get everything you need on your first day.
