I just did a quick google on it to find you "something" - apparently according to the Urban
Dictionary it has also been used as a slur against Jewish people. I don't have any facts to back this up, I merely know it because my family is Sicilian and...well..it is just known.

It sounds like "Cumpà!", a Sicilian way to call each other. I think that in English it could be misunderstood with "Goombah", so it would be explained. I don't feel insulted at all, it's not even an insult. :)

P.S.
And not all Italian people are from Sicily, maybe just 10%.

I know this... my family is considered Sicilian and not Italian. I am merely pointing out the slur.

EDIT: Something very important to note here - if you live in Italy or Sicily, you may not realize that here in America non-Italians use it as a slur. And I'm not trying to accuse the poster of being racist or anything, he may be Italian himself - a lot of times people "just didn't know".
