The same scenario could be put in place for the proposed rank specific gear. Even if I'm a Conjurer wearing the Level 50 gear for Pugilist that's unique and untradeable I've still earned it. If the only avenue to accept said gear is to do a series of levequests culminating in a solo showdown to prove your mettle I'm still just as individual as before.
The problem with the proposed "individuality" of class/rank locked gear is that it poses no such thing. Every GLD MRD LNC around level 35 has a Kokoroon's Scale Mail, Conquistador's Elmo, Paladin's Trousers, Engineer's Leggings, and possibly Brigand's gloves from a Toto run. They'll even be wearing the same rings most of the time, 2 Dex/2 Str. Having class/rank locked gear only proves to show that's what people should be wearing at that level, hence, everyone at that level looks the same, hence, no individuality.
Adding a "social" gear skin option like other MMO's would fix this but that's not even necessary. Just change Class/Rank "lock" to Class/Rank required to "unlock" and I think everyone's happy. Those who want to maintain the pride and grandeur of unlocking certain gear can keep that feeling, while those who want to look a certain way even if they're on a different class at the time can. Implementing the same stat reduction mechanics from XI's level sync feature will also help deter people from wearing they're class "unlocked" gear all the time but will still allow them to be "available on call" without having to make another trip to their retainer to put away their class specific gear. Do remember, that this was a particular selling point of the Armoury that a lot of people bought into before the game was released.
Not only did it not mention that you'd need to wait three days in between each change to be fully efficient at each "on the whim" class change but the optimal gear system helped garner this type of play at least. Now it seems like we're needlessly stripping one feature for another. It's particularly frustrating when it's not necessary at all.
Remembering class stat allotments/ complete freedom of earned stat changes without ridiculous arbitrary cooldowns would've made the above scenario more than feasible. I understand the want for class individuality but class/rank locked gear is not the only way to go about it as I've already shown above. Forcing players to reach milestones in order to unlock certain gear not only adds the same individuality concept of present with class/rank locked gear but also adds multiple milestones which this game is currently lacking.
Either that or keep any equippable items separate from your total inventory. I don't see this being impossible with separate gear and inventory screens already in place. Level sync in XI was controversial but I think the stat scaling for gear implemented in tandem was welcomed with open arms by nearly everyone. With the materia system proposed, there is less of a fear for lower ranked weapons being under appreciated in the marketplace.
I not only think this is a fair compromise but is actually better than the system before whilst still retaining the incentives to level different classes and maintaining the philosophy present from the outset of Final Fantasy XIV's conception.
