This story is really underwhelming - it's opened to mixed reviews.

It's not a distaste for spiritualism, it's just a cultural and religious trope. A lot of folklore in various east asian religions revolves around spirits and gods being born from normal people. They sometimes go corrupt, and have to be killed by heroes who sometimes become gods themselves.
I can see the argument about demystifying the FFXIV pantheon, but I think that's kind of what the game is all about at it's core. The scions are made up of almost all uber-educated scholars above 99% of the world. The group started as the "circle of knowing" and most of what we do involves trying to turn magic into a science.

I really tried, really hard, to go with whatever emotion they were thinking they were conveying in this story but... I couldnt.....

Forget a vacation, this is literally a babysitting gig and the only one whos got to have any fun was Estinien.

story wise Emet is having a laugh right now and im not happy about it.


the sad thing about this, with all the story's faults/problems, unfortunately it feels like whoever decides this localization/direction stuff for this story invited a bunch of their friends ill equipped for such a massive game and because everyone will just use ''insert tern/words/etc here'' and say you are a idiot for not liking x perfectly and praising their work as gospel.
and the main people will charge will just go to twitter and pull the same things the Star wars and Marvel people do and insult everyone.

Gods in Eastern mythology are rarely Judeo-Christian omnipotent creators or even Zeus-like figures, they are often ascended mortals who reach a pinnacle point in their journey of cultivation, very Taoist based. Look at all the "sennin" type gods in Chinese lore, half of the Heavens used to be "great sages" who left their mortal coil.

I'm aware it doesn't mean I can't still be critical of it. We already had that really in the primals, I don't see why all holy figures had to do this in the lore.

Mixed reviews is an understatement. 76/100 critic score on metacritic and 7.4 user score and dropping. That critic score is even lower than ARR. Lowest yet.

Well since maintenance is happening, I can post my so far review. Just wrapped up the last feat and can so this MSQ is a missed opportunity...
How did SE allow the WoL to become nothing more than a background NPC, mentor to Wuk Lamat. I would have rather been traveling with Gulool Ja Ja as we search for the City of Gold and uniting a fractured Tural along the way. Tuliyollal could have been like Ishgard restoration, the further you go through the MSQ the more tribes join the city.

Instead, we are stuck wondering why we should care about Wuk's bid for Dawnservent, who has shown little character growth since the journey began.

Because that is LITERALLY how the underlying world building is constructed. In this particular universe there are no gods, all gods are creations of mortal instrumentation, that is just a fundamental building block of this game, like how every magic is aether. There are no other magic types, just different facets of aether, same with the gods, they are ALL just faith powered constructs. To suddenly have a true mythical god like say Zeus would be the weird thing in this universe. If that is off-putting to you then you need to consider switching games.

AGREED!!!!

Why they grabbed this character from XI and then made him a dying old man is beyond me. They could have had us vacationing on the Isle or whatever and get caught up in a brewing civil war that pitted Galool Ja Ja against Wuk Lamat for control. Or really, ANYTHING other than what they did, and it would have been better, and it would have been a better redemption arc for the Beseiged boss than making him a weak leader who doesn't just name a successor.

But again, this game has no identity and it shows. Almost none of their OC are any good, the one they plucked from another game is the more compelling character. If they are going to grab stuff from XI, they should give it the respect it deserves.

Honestly as far as I can tell the writers just outright hate fantasy settings and are trying to purge all the fantasy elements from the story

Just finished the game...

Bar zone six and Wuk I liked everything else...So 30% of the story is good the rest is bland to right out bad.
