It'll probably not happen that way. Chinese censors for video games may be a bit more prudish, if they operate under the same rules as Wuxia and Xanxia Donghua censors.

The wallpaper, on the other hand, is probably easy to find on any Social Media service you're likely to visit. Heck, Y'shtola was wearing that Summer's Flame Pareo and top combination in-game, as a screenshot posted to Reddit 4 years ago would show.

Im not exactly sure why I get the feeling this announcement is a sign that it’s over for this game but I do. I guess It’s just cell phone games are not meant to be taken seriously and on top of that most of them are cash grabs.

But whatever feeling I have about this is not a good one for sure. Oh well.

A part of me expects this to feel "classic" in name only—primarily through features like the level cap, story, raids, and gear. Regarding the actual gameplay mechanics, I think it’s far more likely we’ll see something closer to the modern retail version of the game or perhaps an entirely reimagined set of skills designed specifically for mobile.

Just wait til the mobile version makes bank for SE, then they will focus on improving just that since countries like China has a bigger mobile game market than PC/console. By reading about their new monetization makes me think of stamina system or limited dungeon entries of sorts.

Saying mobile games are not to be taken seriously in 2024 is living in a cave. Monetization is one thing, experience is another, which multiple games have shown to deliver in the last few years.

He did another interview I think before dawntrail or endwalkers where someone asked the possibility of a arr classic and he said that would be as much of a nightmare as 1.0 classic.

I'll pass. I already maintain a subscription and seeing resources going to making a mobile version doesn't thrill me. It also doesn't encourage me that the expansions to come will be flourishing with content that the PC and console players are asking and hoping for.

It gives me a sinking feeling, that's for sure. I will be curious to see how it looks once we start to get some actual gameplay footage and not just this trailer. But curious in that foreboding way that makes you click on an obviously stupid video online because some part of your brain insisted on looking at it to satisfy your curiosity when logically you knew it would be a waste of your time all along.

I have some seriously mixed feelings on the character graphics actually looking more "authentic" in the video to pre-Dawntrail graphics. It would be really messed up if the only way I could get my old face back was to play the mobile version of FFXIV while my characters continue to look like strangers on my PC after Dawntrail.

This is for the Chinese market, making it available to the global market is more of an afterthought.

A massive majority of the Chinese gamers play on mobile phones. The only place where you will find XIV in China is in Internet Cafes and its pay by the hour.

They will only charge for glamours in the global version but I am all but certain that the Chinese version will be pay to win.

They released an official video regarding the combat system in case anyone's curious. The account posted is official btw.

I'll eat my own hat if this game turns out to have more fun battle gameplay and encounter design (despite a reduced number of skills and mobile limitations), "better" graphics (true to the original and brushed-up animations), is more coherent design-wise, and modernised where it counts while still feeling like ARR. I don't want to imagine that a mobile game will feel more like the true FF14 while my account/character of 11+ years in the original game that I invested lots of time and money into ends up giving me a less authentic experience.

If the mobile game turns into positive competition in the sense that it'll lead to SE stepping up the development of their main game then I think this could actually be a good thing.
I only worry that - with mobile games being so popular and profitable on the Asian gaming market in particular - a successful mobile version could (very) slowly but steadily supersede the current main game and become the new "future-proof" main game. Maybe I'm being too pessimistic here but considering the amount of money mobile gaming makes...

Could be a possibility that SE might see the mobile success as enormous in China (or Asia in general) since it's gonna be F2P and then start changing the PC/console to become F2P with cash shop to boost up their earnings.

Developed by a Tencent subsidiary but Yoshida apparently has been spending a lot of time overseeing it. If it doesn't flop, I wouldn't be surprised if SE's stupid enough to further downsize XIV's dev team(fired or reassigned) and just try to coast on whatever cut they're getting.

Seems the Mobile version has released its job trailer. To me it appears they reworked the ARR era jobs to act more like their EW/DT counterparts, with some jobs having some abilities unique to mobile: https://youtu.be/5rMOSHAiFRE

It reinforces the idea that retail may be indeed designed in such a way as to be able to be ported over to mobile much more easily, especially if you consider the healer and SMN kits.

I agree. If anything, such as viera/hrothgar hats and housing are better in the mobile version (my gut feeling is there is a 100% chance they will be better), there will surely be a pressure to frantically catch up. And I just think it is certain development teams or structures that have this mindset that it's "difficult" to do.

The reason modders manage it is because it's not. It's a bit like Luke trying to lift the X-wing in Star Wars.

I don't believe so. At least not while Yoshi-P or any of the original team are involved. Profit aside, they have an attachment to the game after over a decade developing it.

Yoshi-P clearly believes more in a game being a game than it endlessly chasing profit. He's said that many times but it's obvious just from the way the game sells (and the whole "take a break" thing). It doesn't do it the way most other MMORPGs do it now, and the mindset of just trying to make a good game instead of chasing profits is the one thing people recognize as the game doing right, even if they see numerous problems with the game still.

Square Enix supposedly believes this too from what I recall, despite all their failed cashgrabs, but it's rather more true with Yoshi-P since he didn't want to put the mog station UI anywhere but the Inn room and it was purely so people could try mog station gear on to see if they really will like it on their character.

I don't think they'd outright delete the game and I wouldn't expect FF14 mobile, if successful, to supersede classic FF14 in the forseeable future. But I can imagine a slow and steady transition if the mobile game survives and generates good profit, which could make the switch feel a lot more organic and natural because of its gradual nature (or you could say "boiling frog", if you want to be cynical, lol). So at some point, perhaps in 10ish years, this transition might be complete and FF14 mobile would take the place of the main game (esp. if we expect mobile gaming (tech) to become proportionally more advanced across this 10 year timespan, as well).

I really hope so. That's what I'm trying to keep counting on since Yoshi-P, despite his board role, seems to be someone who also cherishes gaming on a personal level. But if it's true that he'll retire in about 10 years (more or less with the conclusion of FF14's next arc?) then I have less faith in SE regarding FF14's future after YP's retirement.

I could see that. If you want my guess, I would say it would likely follow in step with its retail counterpart with a robust cash shop for outfits, emotes, mounts, etc since the items I just listed do make up a good chunk the FFXIV cash shop. Character services, such as Fantasias, will also be a likely item you will see in the shop.

I don’t understand this though because if that’s the case they’ve already failed miserably? The combat trailer shows they’re using animations, abilities and effects that don’t exist in the main game. I imagine rotations will be more simplified too, plus there’s the great big spammable auto attack button. So they’ve done all of these job changes to port the game to mobile, then made the mobile game different anyway?

It’s so unbelievably stupid that I wouldn’t be surprised if it was true lol
