Shinier lips, thats about it for me. Seems like the lips remained unchanged. Its still larger than current one (Endwalker).
I was initially irked by how flat and cake-ish the characters looked in 1.0, but I'm so glad they updated them in time for release!
Here's the differences between my Lalafell:
https://imgsli.com/MjY5MzUz
There really was no need to overly improve upon the details of the Lalafell's face if you can even put it that way, so any additional minor improvements like better lighting are welcome extras. The shadows and lighting improvements stand out the most, which results in a more rounded, 3d looking Lalafell face as I'm sure was intended in the first place!
I think the only thing I miss from the original benchmark are the way the eyes look (indoors at least). The olive colour that I'm partial to looks dull and flat, and misses that bright and shiny look of the old. There's also this lighter shade of green underneath that helps to sell the 3d look of the eye, that's sadly missing from the new. Dunesfolk eyes should be bright, round, and glassy which they almost nailed in the old one, so I do hope they do another pass over the eyes before launch.
Ironically, as a Hyur who passed the first outrage, I now look worse, but I'm also not that broken up about it. I blame my own shadow settings before I blame SE on this one, but my taoster of a PC tried.
Well..as a male Viera Face 3 player, which got hit pretty hard in the first benchmark, I personally feel like they saved my baby boy with the update :o

Dawntrail Benchmark after update
I like it. <3 The lips and eyes look so much better. Especially the lips!
Added a comparison screenshot of how my Miqo'te face 4 mouth looks in the game at the moment. Should make it easier to spot the difference. The lighting in the new benchmark character creator is still a bit brighter, but I tried to get it as close as possible. (I am amazed how many weird weathers Central Thanalan has for a desert place. The one "clear skies" lately was around night... xD )
Miqote: "Can our fangs be longer?"
Devs: "Can do!"
Elezan: "Our nose is a off, can it be fixed?"
Devs: "You got it!"
Au Ra: "We have special eyes..."
Devs: "You have special eyes."
Hrothgals: "Can we get more than 5 hairstyles?"
Devs: "Piss off."
Hrothgar: Can male Hrothgars get their hunchback adjusted like male viera's posture fixes, or turned into a toggle for those who don't like the hunchback? At the very least to match female Hrothgar's straight backs?
SE: *silent*
Hrothgar treated differently and suffering in general it seems. :(
It is on all the mouths for face 3... it's way too much

character stuff aside...it is very foggy.
It is so foggy it looks polluted
I preferred how crisp it looked before.

Sorry to other players out there this post might be a little annoying and a bit gushy, but I really wanted to express how thankful I am for the development team.
I thought about posting on the JP forums, however I cannot read or speak a lick of Japanese and I knew if I used google translate my message would probably be lost in translation. I hope that if I post here one of the english community team members or any bilingual JP devs can read this and pass it on! I thought about adding another thread but I felt awkward making a new thread just for something I wanted to say.
I am sincerely grateful to all the hard work the development team did in addressing player concerns and feedback. I posted on the forums here with feedback on my character - which i wouldn't really have considered overly helpful however I tried anyway in the hopes someone would understand what my problem was, however I didn't really think anyone would address my complaints about my character because I knew they were very subjective taste, I did what I could in the character creator to adjust how I liked, however I couldn't fix his facial expressions - the way his eyes and mouth looked and every time he smiled in the benchmark I felt uneasy and unsettled.
I'm so grateful to you (the development team) that overall my concerns were addressed, I did have to make some changes based off the updated lighting to his skin and eyes, however to me this was absolutely fixable with a fantasia, and I'm happy my midlander is not only the same as he was, but vastly improved! I can't wait for Dawntrail now! I know you guys have received a lot of negative feedback and its so very close to launch and it would have been extremely disheartening to hear the harsh comments on your hard work. I didn't want to add to the voices but I'm so glad that you took that feedback and worked on addressing player concerns without taking offense or resentment to the players and it means the world to me. I know how difficult it would have been this close to launch having to address as much as you could while still having your other work on top of that. To the person who redrew the eyes and lip textures especially, thank you so much.
I have been playing as the same character model since the launch of A Realm Reborn, I thought the changes I didn't like was just going to have to be a bitter-pill I'd swallow cause overall this update would be beneficial for the health and future of the game going forward. I'm no longer disappointed or sad, I'm excited for Dawntrail and I hope you have a successful smooth launch ahead!
Please know I'm so thankful and I won't forget what you did any time soon.
(Also I'm very sorry to the other players reading this, I hope you skipped over it and ignored it. I just was so happy when I opened the new benchmark and played the trailer everything looked awesome and I wanted to express gratitude.)
Okay I’m going to try to put my thoughts into one post as well thought out as I can

Here is my 3 comparisons, as you can see the second benchmark is definitely better than the first benchmark (the first one was kinda a nightmare). Now let’s look at the positives first. Firstly the new lighting does wonders for the flat cheeks and the removal of the backlight in the eyes doesn’t feel bad in the second benchmark compared with the first. I also personally didn’t notice the face 4 neck seam on my skin tone but noticed it seriously if I made him any darker or lighter
Now let’s move to the negatives of which there are few I’d like to discuss
1) clan markings
https://i.postimg.cc/L6Xx6SNv/IMG-1769.jpg
https://i.postimg.cc/6Qmvcsd6/IMG-1770.jpg
For some reason in the benchmarks the clan marking are super blurry for no good reason and they also appear quite a few shades lighter which I don’t really like. You can also notice in this close up the eye shape has changed giving it a less angular appearance which makes him look softer which I’m also not a fan of
2 & 3) the lips and the face shape
https://i.postimg.cc/g0ZYC1C2/IMG-1772.jpg
https://i.postimg.cc/nrH9cHxk/IMG-1771.jpg
In the benchmark my characters lips are pulled up in what makes him appear to have a semi permanent smile. You can also see his cheeks have become less angular. The combination of these things reduces face 4’s “stoic” design and leaves him looking more youthful and more “dopey”. This is a change that I really don’t think needs to happen
So yeah overall for me benchmark 2 is better than benchmark 1 but I don’t think benchmark 2 is better than my current character
I've also noticed au ra scales change color depending on skin color. What's up with that?
I think what is obvious here, is many of you simply don't like the new aesthetic and want ZERO changes and that is not what is happening here. Also, I think this proves, many of you will never be satisfied. Period. The game launches in 25 days for Early Access. They aren't delaying it to appease your nitpicking. No face or character is going to be 1:1. And what I am honestly seeing here is a death by a thousand cuts where in the end NO ONE is going to be happy because folks who loved previous changes are now upset. Folks who demanded changes are still not happy. You can tweak something over and over again until the end result NO ONE is happy. At all.
These poor folks have 25 days and probably less to get DT ready to launch. They don't deserve the hate and vitriol being thrown their way over this.
I know my character won’t be 1 to 1
I’m pointing out changes that don’t need to have been made. Why does my lips have to be turned up like that, that’s not a change that has to be made considering other races got the opposite change where their soft smile was changed to the current stoic look I have.
I’m fine with a lot of the changes and the updated lighting is good I’m just providing feedback on changes that I don’t think needed to happen. I’m providing feedback, isn’t that the point of the forum so to speak
I’m not going to quit over this, I’m calmly providing feedback for changes I noticed in the benchmark as yoshi p asked us to do
Hrothgals and -guys getting the short end of the stick.. What else is new. :(
Don't get me wrong, I absolutely love their general design, can't wait to play them! They are in general all I wanted and more! However, it is very painfully obvious how low priority Hrothgar have been (both genders) and continue to be. It's not like we're demanding special treatment - we're talking about giving Hrothgar the bare minimum literally any other race in this game has. No other race has race exclusive hairstyles limited to their face types, and they have certainly more than three to choose from. (Considering two are just the other two with minor changes on both guys and gals.. no, I don't count them as an extra hairstyle.)
Their awesome claws are also still attached to their gear. The claws exist, their position on the fingers exist, "Racial features" as a category exists. Making them a toggleable option in the character settings shouldn't be the rocket science when all parts required for this processs are right there. The claws for the Hrothguys would need some adjustment, they look kind of glued on atm, but just give them the claws from the ladies and we're good.
Also, what AnotherPerson said: Seeing several Hrothguys without a hunch in the trailer, and Hrothgals without hunch to begin with, feels really bad. It's in the game, apparently it works, so why not let us choose? Why not add a toggle for this as well, for both genders?
From day one of debates about Hrothgals there have been plenty of people voicing concerns the devs might do the same mistakes they did with the guys all over again, for years, before it was mentioned there would be a chance of getting them. And yet here we are... Considering they do indeed listen to feedback, after all this is why we got another benchmark, it is painfully obvious when ALL complaints about one race are ignored entirely, since Shadowbringers. After years they finally started adding new hairstyles to the guys - why are they limiting them for the girls now yet again? There is really no other reason for this than just poorly covering up how bad they messed up the first time, and you cannot convince me otherwise.
In other mews: I don't blame the devs for it, I didn't see anyone pointing it out and I can barely believe I missed this despite making at least a dozen Hrothgals, but they have seamlines on the arms and the neck.

Exact issue I still have. The new benchmark is a vast improvement but face 2 Au Ra F still has a very small mouth compared to what we currently see in game.
https://imgur.com/bxWDB9R
Other than that, the low res face paints clash with the new textures and I found a small pigmentation(?) issue with darker skin tones and the forehead scales.
https://imgur.com/G6sRQGB
Compared to other posts on this thread, lighter skintones look incredible with the new lighting. Lets hope the darker ones will look good in game ...
Will post this on the JPN side later.
My own concerns:
Thank you for the Benchmark changes.
Unfortunately, it seems that there are still existing issues in the design of Au Ra. It seems Au Ra changes were largely ignored.
1. The pupils are too big/dilated. They were small originally. This changes the look of the character. Please change this back or add an option for the pupils to be big or small.
2. The colours of the umbral ring are more darked and cannot be easily replaced. My character was directly imported, and the colour is significantly darker. This colour can no longer be replicated as there are not many colours for blue. This blue was important as it represented the colour we’ve seen come up in the story multiple times with significant story relevance.
3. The lips are no longer upturned at the corners. This makes the characters expression change from slightly happy to neutral or expressionless.
There are more issues, but I feel these are most pressing for my own Au Ra.

For #2:
https://i.imgur.com/D03eWSX.png
They didn't change anything that people were complaining about with the Male Viera redesign. "Listening to feedback" lol!
They just tweaked the lighting and gave the devs favorite races a tune up and called it a day.
I'm having the same issue with the change of mouth corners. I was hoping it was a lighting issue, but it's just a change of model. This is for Female Au Ra face#1. She no longer has the small smile on her lips and just looks like she's staring into the void.
Also, I actually liked the skin on the 1.0 version of the benchmark compared to the update. Though in direct lighting the update looks better. The eye highlight is now always bright and doesn't change in lower lighting, which is odd since it did in the old benchmark.
https://i.imgur.com/RmzWpGt.png
Bearable as long as I don't glance towards a light source! This is the result of turning a few degrees. Why is she so tired?!
https://i.imgur.com/PyksVNi.png https://i.imgur.com/b92LQPn.png
By the way, I notice the hair is only high res and wirey when zoomed in all the way. When zoomed in a little, only the hair closest to the camera is high res. Is there a graphics option for this?
https://i.imgur.com/Kw9CvoK.png
There's also an alpha transparency issue with hair overlapping hair in sunlight as you can slightly see above her forehead in the second image. In motion this looks much worse, but I haven't played with settings to figure out what's doing it.
Looking at all there pictures I am noticing a fairly consistent trend among the lip alterations. Which is, Cupid's Bow are regularly narrowed, and especially on female characters, in some cases entire mouths are narrower and so appear smaller and "more cute".
Here is an example of my own character, current game above and new benchmark below, where I have traced the shape and highlighted where the highest points are. It is a drastically different lip shape.
https://i.imgur.com/R7P8kcp.jpeg
The lighting is a clear improvement to the first benchmark - someone not familiar with my character wouldn't notice anything different at all, especially from a distance.
This benchmark does show however that the current eye shape has been slightly changed so that the thickness of the upper eyelid is now thinner while the outer edges became noticeably thicker like a raccoon eyeliner makeup style. I'm not sure why it seems that the geometry was inverted as such, but the devs clearly put a lot of work into the changes and my character looks better overall: her lips were changed to reflect their current look and her teeth are not cursed anymore. I'll take it!
(Still, it would be nice to have the upper eyelid/outer edge thicknesses reflect their current look too though!)
https://i.imgur.com/s4M6LP6.gif
https://i.imgur.com/Qpnt0l4.gif https://i.imgur.com/lryNIdl.gif
Agreed with everything said. The changes to the lips make my WoL look incredibly creepy. That perpetual smile just doesn't feel right, and for a moment I thought I was looking to a Face 1 character. It changes the vibe of Face 4 completely, and there isn't even a lip option without it either!
That aside, I could swear my hairstyle has dropped in resolution again. I can't test it because i don't have the previous benchmark but it has a lot of pixelation everywhere:
https://cdn.discordapp.com/attachmen...fa0bcaefa302c&
EDIT:
Also, what wrong with the eyes and eyebrows? The eyebrows are thinner and pushed further apart from the eyes now. The overall shape for both is slightly different and not in a good way. And because of the default stance for male miqo'te you rarely if ever get highlights in the eyes in the benchmark.
https://cdn.discordapp.com/attachmen...bc9af30a77de2&
https://cdn.discordapp.com/attachmen...f05326dd97bef&
They actually fixed the hairstyle I used, which no longer has that weird spaghetti look it had before, and also added back the colour, so I am quite happy with this!
But I noticed that the shadow resolution has been changed for the character editor, which sometimes can result in overly sharp shadows being cast from the hair and nose. (The shadows remain soft and blurry in the actual benchmark on the same settings)
Old benchmark on the left, new one on the right.
https://i.imgur.com/DLaADF3.png
https://i.imgur.com/qyPVQG5.png
Bald hairstyles still aren't upscaled, still have a texture seam around the whole head, and now have a brand new lighting seam that didn't exist before, so it's actually worse.
I like the intentional changes and the new benchmark looks much better. But the technical issues that basically ruin my character are still there and it looks like I'm going to need to fantasia even though I don't want to.
https://imgur.com/a/JFsK2lB
OMG I'm so happy they fixed the brand new hairstyle for Viera, Miqo'te and Hrothgar. I really wanted to use it, but in the first Benchmark it looked kind of ridiculous around the area where the normal human ears would have been. They filled in those weird gaps with hair, and it looks so much better now.

New benchmark is MASSIVELY improved. I can tell there are still a few changes (mostly the lip shape) but overall my character is actually recognizable as herself again.
I am happy! :D I was very very sad with the last benchmark as it didn't look like my lalafell and no changes I made could restore her. But I didn't have to change anything at all here, and she looks exactly like she does in Endwalker :)
Here is the old benchmark:

Here is the new benchmark:

I'm really happy that the eyes and the nose smudge were fixed.
Additionally, I noticed this bug, I think? I don't really mind it because at least my lalafell looks the way I want her to, but I thought I should mention. Not sure why the eyelashes go grey in shadows.
https://file.garden/ZlzmggzAvyz0wMqh...095238_518.png
Anyways, thank you devs for changes :) I hope they keep making changes and by Dawntrail everyone is happy with their WOL too!
I really think they need to fix the default male miqote positioning because with the slight “look down” male miqote always have the parts of the eyes you do see on them just looking straight at them still have the same dopey dead the problem the original benchmark had, that or the real reflected light has to be pulled down on the miqote eyes so you still see the real reflected “catchlight” so to speak
Also love the deryk hair. Deryk is my in game husband
One thing I noticed is that you can now cycle through every hit/hurt sound in the voice preview instead of just one.
Also I'm not surprised the board's started to flood with separate feedback topics again.
After criticizing so much, I also like to point out I am really really happy with my other characters. I love both my Rava (f) and Veena (m) Viera, my Dunesfolk Lala (f) and my Sea Wolf Roe (f). I guess it's my personal kind of luck that of all the characters I have it's my main and most important one that looks so off at the mouth, in a way that cannot be fixed with a fantasia.
(And of course there are the Hrothgar issues, now existing for both genders, horray. Not really bothering being mad about it anymore, just very very disappointed. But at least both the Hrothgar and soon to be Hrothgal are only alts...)
