I know, I was answering them strictly on the principle of the age of a word as a guarantee of legitimacy. I never said that that specific pronoun wasn't used today (or else there's either a serious reading problem or a serious expression problem on my part).
Side note: even when it's used as an equivalent of the singular, the "they" disappears immediately as soon as the identity of the person is clarified. So it's more of an intermediate step than anything else.
That's cool, but it also expresses the point I made to the poster I quoted that names are used for specificity and become trite when the subject matter is known. The Encyclopedia Eorzea entry on Loporrits is a roundabout way of doing exactly that.
Draconians are also genderless. Yet, when we think of Azdaja, Vrtra, Bahamut, Tiamat, Nidhogg and others of the brood, we will still use male/female pronouns to refer to them. They, themselves also acknowledge this. As an example Vrtra will use "sister" as a term of endearment when speaking or referring to Azdaja along with she/her. Again, it's a roundabout way of doing it, but it's also endearing and inventive, that way a name like Azdaja doesn't become stale.
The Loporrits are even further subject to this considering their names all in end with the suffix, "way." Imagine reading Livingway three times or more in a single phrase, or even multiple Loporrits. Livingway, Cookingway, and Singingway went to Livingway's house, and along the way ran into Dreamingway. What a day!"
.... OK that's actually kinda cute. But you know what I mean!
They would only have to write one script without changing any of the wording depending on players choice of gender, so could save some time.
The WoL in the trailer is a placeholder for your character so you can refer to the WoL as whatever you want and can't be wrong
Ya know, why does the placeholder have to be the Derplander, why can't we get multiple trailers with different characters as the placeholder, at least the original 5 characters that ended up being used as a base for Ardbert's group. Although swapping out the character for a Lalafell would definitely fuck up the animations.
Because changing out the main character in every trailer would be confusing. New players wouldn't know who it was and existing players would be left wondering if it was a new character. They would have to announce every trailer, "this is the WoL!", and that still wouldn't fix the they/them issue as looks don't imply one's preferred reference. There is nothing broke here to fix, nothing here is offensive or non-inclusive.
I kind of agree, I tried playing other races, but then feel out if place if i'm not derplander. But I suppose there isn't enough money and other stuff for switching the placeholder in the trailers.
What is weird though, is that the in game trailer did used to get different races, I remember back in the they PLD was showcased as a Miqo'te for example in ARR and stuff, now everything is derplander.
Uh I mean ... according to census the MAJORITY of the players don't play derplander, and the majority also played female characters and I don't think that's ever been an issue. Asking for a different CGI cutsceen for each race would go beyond what most consider a reasonable demand ... by several magnitude
Add to that the fact that Derplander is a brand mascot at this point.
I do not play male hyur but I would be very upset if they stopped using him as the face of the game.
He's a cool guy.
Anyway, here's some trivia for you.
Back in 1.0 there was this CG lady that could have been an alternative to John Fantasy for any cutscene. Like... I think the idea was to make them interchangeable, until they decided against it.

Part of me was hoping they'd start a new adventure after EW and they'd use her instead, but did I really care that much? Nah. I like John Fantasy, The Final Man.
As an option go for it.
Where's the tastefully animated beard stubble?
