I think there were plenty but after Tanaka resigned his spot for Yoshi to take control it's hard to tell if FFXIV was as intended way before BETA. The experiance was purposely design around gathering & crafting. The think is, there were waaaaay too many casuals that complained about the new degenerative system(equipment breaks/ food spoils, etc.) and this... a failed launch in 2010.
A game that revolves around actually working for your reward is something RMT doesn't like. It's not productive or a quick buck. Bots won't exist if the code wasn't easy to crack or the programming difficult enough to run. Yeah, thanks to Yoshi-P FFXIV goes mainstream and casual friendly with still enough room for the hardcore, the elitist, the socials and RPs.
Everyone can't have it there way...if you could have everything YOUR way, what of the rest of us, I dealt with it in FFXI, I think I can deal with it here.
