I don’t buy into any of the propaganda or expectations of other people. When I run the mentor roulette I let the game do the teaching and simply do my part and probably carry a little. If people die I explain what happened as concise as possible and what needs to happen. Never had someone turn on me doing this.
This usually gets us in and out quickly. Truth is good and bad experiences will happen in an MMO all the time and a label isn’t going to change that. The mentor system is a volunteer program for when you feel like helping. It is neither a privilege nor a burden. Hating on them like they’re paid to do things or SE employees won’t change anything because more good than bad comes out of the system so it’s a net positive.
But while people debate what expectations they have of mentors in their perfect world I’m gonna tell you truth:
The expectations of SE for a mentor is someone who met the minimum requirements and clicked a few buttons. They hope they want to help people but will not force them to. End of story.
