This is almost precisely how I handle Grit in pugs...
I'm sorry but if I'm in a pug with people I don't know healing me, I'm throwing my DPS aspirations to the wayside to do my real role and that's tank without dying. If I can plainly observe that my group is up to snuff and keeping me up ain't no thang and my healers seem bored then yeah, I'll turn Grit off and go ham, but I don't run with the "must be in DPS stance as much as possible" mindset in pugs. I run with a "only leave tank stance if things are going well and it doesn't seem like it will hinder us" mindset in pugs.
