Omg now is not the time to joke about anima mods ban them! Bannnnnmn bann themm allll!
Trajidy! I saw a Japanese guy yesterday!
The outright civil war in Libya....well...there's just no audience for the dog and pony show for that, is there?
Are we done here? This is all silly.
Quite a loose definition you must have, depending on whom you're directing that at. So if one is not compassionate to all people, they are not at all? Because we choose whom we personally deem fit to have empathy for, makes us 'bad', or hypocritical?
If there are two men bleeding to death side by side, and one is a pedophile, the other an upstanding citizen who volunteers weekly... I can safely say, I know who I would help first, what an awful person I am. In this case, though obviously not that extreme, Alien is the 'bad' victim here.
Check page 11. I rule with a Goddamned iron fist.Quote:

Compassionately Evil, i like that hehe.
And Arturia, you're right I did come off strong and condescending. Sorry for that Reika. But I do stand by my words.
As for topic, I hope its not longer than 2 weeks. Perhaps they'll have an update ready when we get back? But getting back would be plenty good for me.
/sigh can a mod just lock this thread and ban anyone posting tactless remakes about the japanese crisis.
I think they have things higher on their priority list than to move the server. Like perhaps making sure that their friends and family are fine. I am amazed that the server were kept up for that long even. With the earthquake, tsunami and meltdown, if I were an SE employee, I'd probably be outside trying to make sure my friends and family are safe and to see and help those that are injured.
I hope you understand Peregrine that the people here who understand that SE have to shut down the server are NOT playing the victim or trying to get attention. We simple understand and offer our condolescense to a nation in crisis. The people who are playing victim here are those who complain that devastation in another part of the world had effect their ability to entertain themselve.
And just for your information, i do not live in Japan, but I have 2 friends that do. one of them is fortunately not in the country at the moment, but his mother and sister is living in Yokohama. My heart goes out to him and I pray that his family stay safe.
I've also know someone who lost both of his daughters to the tsunami in 2004, and seeing how it affected him with the kind of sadness I can only imagine, I can sympathise with all the losses in Japan.
This is a time of tragedy, it is only natural for us to sympathise, and it pains me when some of us here are insensitive, ignorant and self-centered enough that they want to call attention to their tiny loss of being unable to play a game.
I believe what SE doing is the right thing to do, consever the energy so that there will be enough power for the vital part of society, so hospital can treats the wounded, so that shelthers can keep the people unable to go home warm. And without the need to run the game and maintaine the server, the people working there can go home and look after their loved one.
please go make a tread that fits your discussion topic.
Well said, MarkH. Beautiful post.
OMG, Japan's earthquake is that bad that the game servers need to be shut down, first time in my life. I hope the casualties and damages in Japan can be minimized. Also hoping that the energy used for the servers can somehow lessen the problem there.
Hello everyone!

Holy shit a mod in my post.
I hope it doesn't get too... Bananas around here.
This. Some of the posters in this thread are absolutely disgraceful and should be removed from posting. We are all entitled to our opinions, sure, but anybody of the opinion that this is anything but a humanitarian attempt at saving your own people is an absolute IDIOT.
This situation is absolutely horrible, anybody following it would agree whole-heartedly and I fully back SE's decision to close the servers for a while.. Shutting down as heavy-on-power a service such as FFXI+FFXIV must help a lot of people in a lot of ways, and there's nothing greater a company like Square could do at present.
Remember. We're losing game time, sure, but square are losing a LOT of money, however, the people of the world are more important than the characters of FFXIV.
Just suck it up!
I didn't read every post. The few that I did have me thinking to myself, I am quite disappointed.
I don't think SE should be apologising, cause this is simply out of their hands. If the servers need to be shut down to help those people in Japan it doesn't need any kind of excuse doing so.
All the best SE!

I've only read the first post and the one on page 11 so I might be repeating what was already said but about the server down, it doesn't mean they don't have backup.
First of all let's disregard the data backup and just talk about server backup. Those can come in many form.
- It can be the use of multiple pieces in the same server so that if a part of the server break, it can still be use while the broken part is switch.
-It can be unused backup server in the same server room that are there to take over when a server have a problem.
-Can be the use of multiple server room in different building so that even in case of fire or something similar to that the server can still be running.
There are other possibility but those are the main ones.
In the current case, the server shut down is due to the electric power company asking for it's customers to reduce their usage of power. Even if SE have backup server, without electricity those can't be use. They might have a generator but those are mad for blackout, not for 24/7 usage.
What the shutdown mean is that they don't have backup servers outside of the area that get it's electricity from TEPCO and there's nothing wrong with that. A situation where an electric company can't assure it's service for an entire area for a prolongate and unknown time is quite rare. A server backup in another area would need maintenance and employees to maintain it. Unlike backup in the same room or a close by building, it's a lot less cost-efficient. Sure it suck that the game is going down for a week and yes they'll lose money because of that but in the long run for the frequency at witch event like that occur, not having backup servers outside the TEPCO area wasn't necessary a bad decision.
for the tl;dr, SE probably have backup server, but if they're in the TEPCO area they can't be used so it suck that the game is down but that kind of situation is extremely rare.
1. Earthquakes and Tsunami may be fairly common but not of this magnitude. You don't get cities wiped off the map every day. There's still 10,000 people missing from Minami Sanriku alone.
2. Its expencive to keep servers running. This is the first time they've had to be shutdown since they were started. Its not really viable to keep extra server hosting on the off chance of a disaster like this.
3. Then do that.
4. This has affected FFXIV and the players of FFXIV. Therefore, its relevant.
If you don't like it, leave the game, leave the forums. I doubt you'll be missed much around here.
There are much bigger issues than your ability to play a game.
Yes, New Zealand had been hit by earlier quake too and Japan sent rescue teams to help people there. These were only withdrawn to return to Japan after they got hit with their own quake and tsunami.
From my understanding after speaking to someone in game that is from Japan...
1) Power conservation is the objective here. If shutting down these servers means someone else can have some lights and a generator can get some extra juice for hospitals and shelters then shut the servers down and leave them down for a month. People here are not paying for anything and this is not a matter of economic entitlement.
2) If people can't find a way to use that thing that beats in their chest for more than worrying about their game time on FFXIV then they should have that organ removed and see how they feel about suffering.
3) Someone mentioned Libya...really? Japan did not declare war on the ocean or the land. Japan is not attempting to remove the ocean or the land from power or attempting to subdue the either of them. This is a natural disaster not a civil war. One is a man made event that can be stopped by one side or the other conceding. The other is an event that happened that was not asked for or antagonized. The suffering may be equal but the cause, effect and chance for mercy or compassion are far different.

I like how threads are being deleted by mods. Thank you Mods, you're making this a great place to be in.
Have you read the forums rules? If you haven't just know that spam and rude behavior are mention in it. All your pokemon posts can be count as spam and the way you're responding did come of as rude sometime(not saying you were the only rude one).
I'm just saying not to be surprise to see post not following the forums guidelines being deleted. It's just normal since by posting here you are suppose to agree and follow those rules.
Well yeah, but I'm not exactly contributing to the problem. See, psychology dictates that a random weird thing will diffuse something bad fast.
Plus, if it was an issue, my posts would be deleted or edited and I'd be slapped with a ban like that other guy. RIP poor sucker.
And thats good they do it. At least no chaotic spam mass is here. Multiple threads with same topic, why not to delete less discussed + These were created later.
No moderated forum is a chaos with multiple-thread of same subject so I am glad that mods do their job right. I have to agree with you, they are making great place to be in ;) !
Tbh this thread went off topic long time ago. We all know the situation.
Yep, let's just hope for the best now.
When do you think the servers will be back up?
I can't believe we're even having this discussion.
My prayers go out to the SE staff, their familes and all the people involved in the earthquake. May the lord bless Japan with better times to come. If we had any possible way, I would give our electricity and alot of other things so your people can survive this time of tribulation and loss. For those who are worried about the damn servers/game over peoples lives, you digust me greatly. What if it happened to you?? Would you be crying over a damn game then?? People need to growup seriously and get a life. There is plenty to do in life besides sit in a friggin chair behind a computer screen 24/7 or whatever. Go actually socialize with your friends, put some extra hours in to your job and make more money. Read a book or get some excersice or something, get my point?? No this doesn't apply to the people that actually make time for all those things just those who complain and whine about a game and play 24/7 lol. My take on it sorry.
TEPCO has announced rolling blackouts until April. I would guess that SE will not provide service until TEPCO lifts the blackouts, but that is only a guess.
