Had someone do that on thordan ex df, the bird dropped and everyone except but one.l, he stood there waiting to the time was up a lot of people up and left not waiting for him except me I stood there looking right dead in his eyes and I got the bird winning by 1. His defeat was priceless, I felt his anguish as I swim in it. it was glorious.
Unfortunately sometimes I need to afk to manage chemo medications for someone I know. Really I've been using loot protection as a barrier to prevent me from getting kicked due to randomly afking to do this. Maybe they aren't voting because they are jerks, but not all of us are like that. Life comes first ya know? :)
Some people also use the timeout as a second lower-level Greed option. Anyone who rolls either Need or Greed beats out anyone who waits out the timer, but you'll get it after the timer if everyone else passes. It's a way of saying that you don't really care about the item and will defer to anyone who wants it, but would rather take it than have it just drop on the floor for nobody to get.
(That's less annoying, though, if it's done for stuff that drops from earlier chests, ones that will hit their timeout before the dungeon is finished.)
