Getting rid of surnames

okay, read the first page, anyways. nope, still sounds retarded. you are of the opinion that you will find some way to accommodate others into your little world of ppl without surnames. i.e. optional surnames, i'm sure this name isn't that common, etc. etc. i'm sorry but ummm.... no ty.

btw *whispers* it's a forum and an open discussion, i'll jump into convo whenever the hell i want ;)

If they sent you a tell they would turn up in your auto translate so you just need to start typing out the first few characters of their name.
But I just wouldn't invite them because they have such a stupid name.

There really shouldn't be a problem, once you have talked to that person, all you have to to is type the first 3 letters of their name and hit tab. Itll be there... unless you dont talk to them enough.

I like surnames. No desire to get rid of them, nor any need to.

If a person is in your friends list they will show up in the auto translate or you can /tell them through the list, therefore you only have to remember the last name once, if the person is front of you you can "/t <t>" if you don't want to talk.

If you don't know the person and they /tell you, you can ctrl+r

IMO there is only one situation that sucks, you saw a person try to /t them, they aren't near you anymore and you forgot there last name. That sucks, and it's understandable if you hate it.

But for the most part I think FFXIV did a pretty good job of having little shortcuts in targeting and auto translate to make communicating with people less hard. Some people chose dick move last names anyway and weren't thinking about people actually communicating with them, its so obvious. But I'd like more mmos to adopt a last name system, I'd love to use Zavier in a game but its usually taken up by some dude (me being a chick, the dude's name is pronounce ZAY VEE ER while mine is Zah vee air [so mine is kinda a american weirdo name that copied the french girl pronounciation kinda of xavière (iks sa vi air), i'd put it in proper phonetics if someone cared or needed it lol but that should do it justice.) So I like the last name system and would love to see it expanded. I tend to use Molotovzav a lot in other games with only one name, and its kinda a joke nickname, I'd rather kinda rp with my name in some games.

I agree with Alex and Meleena about keeping surnames.

No need on taking them down, and it's a good way to have an unique name if you want.
Keep the Surnames.

No, surnames are fine. Removal of them would cause a lot of problems and would solve none. People will have stupid and/or uncreative names either way, people need to stop caring so much what other people do.

If they take away surnames that would actually really hurt this game. Sure there are Charles Whathehells around but in FFXI you commonly seen names like this Sephirothschild and it be some dumb little taru. Then Sephiroth, Sephirothx, Xxsephirothxx Xsephiroth and literally 100 similar variations and many other common names from other games or anime. With all those annoying variations also you had people with long names just as long as in XIV but the only difference is XIV has a space and people can share the same first name or last name. I have brothers who play and we all use the same surname as a tag saying who we are. If you see a Draconia on Wutai you know it is me, my mule, or one of my brothers playing. (sure there is the chance someone else has the same surname but it's cool)

By taking the option away to have the name you want and have to use some alteration to get the name you want would hurt this game, whether it be a little or a lot. Personally I can remember sitting in High School watching videos of FFXI and thought up the name I wanted to use "Darrgoth Draconia. I thought FFXI was going to have surnames for some reason just because it seemed fitting to an online Final Fantasy title. I was slightly disappointed when it came out in US and found out you couldn't have a surname so I just went with the first name. When FFXIV announced that they was bringing us surnames I nearly jumped with joy and even I considering that slightly odd just the ability to have a surname. It would give you the ability to make a name for yourself in a bigger way where everyone can know you as such, instead of oh that is just another one of the name clones.

How about X-iroth? I think I'll stick with my name.

We haven't seen any xxxsephiroth23xxx except that 1 during quest, which tells me it's one thing SE got right actually.

Here on Kashuan we don't have many Sephiroths. We have stuff like ironfist,draggonrider,Garliangeneral. Those are the kind of names that stand out like a sore thumb to me.

I say leave the surnames. It provides more opportunity to creat the name you want. A /sea all <insert first name> would fix the problem when trying to find the right Richard or Aya or Shade... FFXI had a /sea that was decent. They should implement that function

A lot of names(including mine...) would not be as good without surnames. Don't blame SE for adding surnames, blame idiots for making retarded names. Then just don't talk to them.

The reason why I like surnames: It lets me choose a name like "Feral Ren". It's so short and simple.

Most people's names would suck if they were just the first name.

There are people out there called "The Situation" for example.

The weird thing is I hadn't read it anywhere, I made it up myself. :S

I personally hated having to have a surname when I was creating my character... but after spending hours figuring out a surname I actually liked, I've grown quite attached to Caliburn Lucent.

I think though, if I wasn't attached to my surname, I'd want the game to just have single names. I've always liked them. They're simple, in my head I just see everyone as their one-word alias, rather than reading their full name in my head when I think of them. I don't know, I would prefer that XIV had never had surnames, but given that they're already here it would piss far too many people off if they were gotten rid of.

And I don't mind in MMOs when people use names which aren't really names, like "The...(something or other)". You can't do that with surnames or it looks kinda lame imo. Now XIV is full of these Lord of the Rings sounding names and I find it slightly... wrong. At least with single-names you know peoples names aren't meant to fit in with the game world.

Actually it used to really piss me off when I seen someones name when they copied it from something else, sorry Rinoa. It doesn't bother me as much now I got over it for the most part, some people just lack any creativity. Darrgoth Draconia is a name I came up years ago and it wasn't inspired by anything I just thought it sounded good. (Actually it would be 2 R's now but I used a different beta account and was on Wutai in beta and that name got saved so I couldn't use it >.<)

I wish everyone was capable of coming up with a realistic fantasy name but I know it just isn't going to happen. Even if it derived from something else add to it and make it your own. That is just asking too much though.

A name i used to use was Latreia. I had made it up by using the notion of "let's make a name that has more vowels than consinents" (or however that's spelled)

I found out a year later, after always being confused as to why greek people kept whispering to me, that it was in fact a greek word meaning "worship".

I admit it doesn't sound like a surname. I was just getting sick of sitting there for hours not being able to play my new game because I couldn't think of a bloody surname. =|

It died when an MMO came out that stole both it's original design from something else and incorporated an endless supply of pop-culture references that filled the game to the point where hardly anything in the game was not stolen from something else.

Have a macro /w <t> for telling

If you can't do that, then they should just add that and you're all set.
