I was originally pretty happy with the game but as I kept playing the lag issues became more and more apparent. As it currently stands I have no motivation to subscribe to an MMO that still has huge lag issues, and SquareEnix still haven't addressed the issue other than moving a thread to the Accepted Bugs forum (and that was nearly a month ago now).
Endgame and PvP are going to be a joke if this internal lag issue keeps up. Granted I live in Australia so I expected some lag (and I've tried the usual fix like using Pingzapper etc.), but the latency in FFXIV is abysmal (I get better performance with EVE Online which is even further away) and seems to affect people that live in the US as well (hell I've seen people that live in Montreal complaining about lag) due to the fact that the servers supposedly only 'tick' once every 300ms (how the hell is that acceptable in 2013?). I also played on Tonberry during Beta Phase 4 and while it felt a little snappier it definitely didn't feel like the 150ms it was supposed to be (again due to the 300ms tick rate).
Of course then there's QoL issues like the tab targeting only selecting the nearest mob the first time you press Tab and then moving in a left-to-right fashion (just make it work exactly like how WoW handles it for crying out loud). I don't want to have to click targets just to make sure I'm selecting the right one (especially in instances).
I've also had friends that have already decided the game wasn't worth grabbing after they weren't able to pick up copies on launch week at all, and others that weren't able to make a character on Behemoth since character creation was locked and so they continued on their own separate server (even when server transfers eventually open up I don't see any of us moving servers unless they're free, which I very much doubt).
I want to subscribe, I really do. This was the first MMO I've had genuine interest in since WoW itself during The Burning Crusade, but until these issues are addressed I cannot subscribe in good conscience.
I have nothing but respect for the new dev team behind FFXIV, but the upper management and support teams need to get their heads out of their asses.
