Make it 1 hour daytime and 1 hour night time :D so it would be 2 RL hours for a full day
I'm more than happy with the way it is. Any longer would be REALLY annoying if you are waiting for a new ingame day / a new kind of weather/type of light / monster spawn /etc.
One entire hour for one ingame day is more than long enough to enjoy every time of the day without becoming inconvenient to others waiting for something.
The rl time = game time idea is even more horrible.
There is so much wrong with that idea:
1. Only seeing one type of ingame time for most players (I'd absolutely hate it to see Eorzea ONLY at midnight!)
2. Players can't participate in content which is time based like for example NM spawning times (yeah sure they could take that out, but I think it's stupid to make a game MORE BORING than it was..because it's actually a great idea to have certain prerequisites for monsters to spawn, like a certain type of day time or weather - it makes the world feel so much more alive :o )
3. Players come from different time zones. If the only argument for changing to rl time = game time is that the immersion is higher if it's night in the game when it's nighttime outside, then it means it's going to be totally immersion-breaking to everyone not playing on the 'right' timezone for the server's ingame time.
Don't get me wrong, I love the Gridania night time screenshots just as much as the next guy, they are beautiful, but I think a few people here are taking it too far.
Just enjoy a beautiful night while it lasts instead of forcing it on everyone for the rest of their lives.
I can agree on slightly longer cycles, but nothing even close to a real-time cycle like the other person suggested. I'd like the days and nights to last longer so I can actually find time to enjoy them (and I think weather patterns should last for longer, and come about more frequently), but I don't want to be stuck playing only at night.
But...most people do work and sleep for at least approximatly the same hours every day. There are some exceptions of course, like people doing shift work at different hours but for the most part at least 5 days a week most people have somewhat of a routine that dictates when people's free time is.
Some people might have a fairly busy life schedule that leaves them with 1-2 hours on certain days and times to do something they want to do. There's no reason by they can't decide to play an MMO unless you want to be an elite player. Some people play MMOs just for fun or to hang around with friends and don't have a particular goal outside of that. I don't think forcing them to play during certain phases of the in-game day is particularly fair for them. They may want to see more of the world during their play time.
I've never had an issue with 1 real hour being 1 game day. It's a fairly reasonable time frame. Any increases should be kept small, and definitely no longer than 2 real hours.
I find this to be an interesting idea. You never really think about it in XI, but it really doesn't make sense that the time period is the same the world over. I can see why this is beneficial from the point of view of planning and scheduling (as well as being easier to handle from a development point).
Whilst the world only consists of the Eorzea region, it's not a huge place that it would reasonably have multiple time zones. But when the world does expand (which I hope it does as time goes on), having this kind of feature would an interesting dynamic that would increase immersion. I wouldn't want to have this as a solution to players getting to see day/night on a 24hr cycle, but rather as a feature on its own sometime in the future.
I also agree with the OP. I think that a day/night cycle of around 2 hours would be nice.
I felt that the one-hour cycle in old XIV (and XI) was a little short. I wanted a little more time to enjoy each phase of the cycle. At the same time, I'm against the idea of a 24-hour cycle. I used to play WoW back when I was living in Japan. WoW has a 24-hour cycle, and since I was on a U.S. server with a real world friend of mine, almost all I ever saw was nighttime. Always in the dark. It got old.
Only people who have time to play all day/night long (understand with no job/school/whatever activity) would benefit a real time 24 hours cycle. Looks like a selfish design to me.
Depending on the events the dev-Team has planned for us, we will be able to determine what the good length for each phase is and give them feedbacks. To me, only game design should be the factor that determines that length, not aesthetic. Though I understand that witnessing as long as possible a pretty night under a full Moon would be lovely.
