Tanaka probably got paid enough to play the scapegoat, so no tears are shed over that. However, saying he is the producer and thus everything is his fault is simplifying the issue. I mention this only because if Tanaka was in charge but his team was understaffed and underfunded, firing him doesn't alleviate the troubles of the former development team, it only perpetuates them. If the real failing wasn't entirely due to Tanaka, then forcing him to step down while ignoring the underlying problems will not help solve anything.
It is best to try and understand the problem, rather than shifting blame onto one person.

It's not about the money to these first-generation square people. He would have done it regardless. It's about thinking you're invincible because you made this genre. Small team? Little money? Well, no, things won't be fine. The first team had a death sentence over its head. Tanaka is a better producer than Yoshi-P. Yoshi-P, with his MMO playing experience, would make for a good lead designer. Yoshi-p may succeed where Tanaka failed, even though tanaka has more talent, because Tanaka hit the panic button and now the XIV team has more support.
If this game succeeds, it will not be because Tanaka stepped down. It will be because it finally has the support from the company it should have had 3 years ago.
Yoshi-P brought you agro icons and ridiculously game-breaking MP regen. Tanaka would have said get the **** out of my office with that ****, we play games here not sit there and be played. -
