I'll post my answer from the other thread:
If people are so opposed to gay marriage that they won't subscribe to an mmo then I will happily not have them tainting the servers with their bigotry.
While I can see why SE are hesitant about including same-sex marriage, I feel they would be much better off just implementing it from the start rather than later on. Like somebody else already said, there would probably be less outcry over it if it was included from the start. Personally, I'm not sure how many people would leave the game if it were included compared to how many people would still play, and I think that SE should be thinking more about promoting equality than making more money- I think the game would still be successful even if people did leave. It's not as if people would be forced into it, so they can't complain about that.
I'm not going to go further into same-sex marriage in the real world, but I will say this- same-sex marriage isn't something to be debated about, it's human rights. I wouldn't want to play with people who disagree with that anyway.
I think we give Japanese players, or any other for that matter, too little credit by assuming that the majority of MMO players are not open-minded in general.
We can already freely pick which race and gender we want want to play, so if marriage is being implemented let us marry whomever we want. If a Lalafell wants to marry a Roegadyn, let them. Stop picturing it if you don't like it, or worrying how it will affect your (ingame) life . Just play the friggin game since, frankly, neither the Lalafell nor the Roegadyn will spend a second obsessing as much about you as you are about them.
Who gives a fying f*** about ingame weddings?? lmao.
I haven't a clue what the point of it is..
I wouldn't take advantage of the marriage facility and wouldn't care if there was no marriage facility at all.
BUT.
Not allowing same gender marriage is discrimination. Discrimination should be fought wherever it is. Allowing discrimination to continue in one part of culture makes it seem more acceptable in others.
I am a full supporter of Same Sex marriage....
however, in this instance I am on the side of, "S.E. could have avoided this whole fight by following WoW's lead and just not having offically sanctioned marriages in the game at all. Sell vanity engagement/wedding rings/clothing at vendors/crafters and let those who want to have twee, pointless little ceremonies have to figure out how to make that happen on their own."
People have been getting "married" in MMORPGs since they first came on the scene, it's only a handful of games that were dumb enough to try and micro-transaction them, and wound up getting themselves hip deep in a debate they never wanted to have.
There's no need to discriminate. If we can't all have marriage it's not fair for some to be able to. I would think SE would know better than to implement it only for some. They've been pretty open-minded so far.
Alienating a large part of the player base again wouldn't be a good idea.
