Another funny thing that was brought to my attention; Apparently Dungeons and Dragons have a race called Lupin. I didn't know this because I don't really play D&D but they are wolf people as well and actually look like our Lupin.

They just released a new edition and guess what! Lupin are now playable after 20 years of not being playable. D&D has influenced and inspired the gaming world including Final Fantasy.
What better way to commemorate an occasion than to have our Lupin become playable?

I'm really curious on what you consider "normal". Is Au Ra too animalistic for you? Would you want a Meteion-like race? What if it's a lizardman like Mamool Ja or Baanga that are not strictly "furry" by definition but very inhuman? Do you have an idea of what you are expecting? Half-elezen? Is that what you mean?
You know, I've seen a lot of "I wish we'd have more small races/We need more non-human races" in discussions about new the subject and the first race they show for 8.0. is a dwarven-kitten and I can't help but think they might add that. Would be funny if we had 3 cat races. Canine-lovers in shamble.
I kinda wish Square-Enix would do a sort of... allied race thing? Where they release a bunch of races but that are very clearly limited. (For example, Lupin (no hat), Mamool Ja (chest only?), etc.) Then again, it doesn't fit very well with the whole "you only need one character". Might boost fantasia sales though.
While the dwarven kitty race is cute, I will definitely be upset if that happens before Lupin. But alas, it's all Square's decision in the end. But yeah that race idea is cool. I am honestly perfectly fine with no hats/traditional hairstyles but I do know the head of Lupin needs a serious rework for them to be a player character. Other than that, they are pretty much good to go.
I myself have a little bit of alt-itis due to me being a role player. I only have this character and my female hrothgar that I role play as a Lupin. I focus on one while being extremely casual with the other. It's been working out but I know a few people that have gone hard on alts and I have no idea how they do it. I hate that glamour, especially from the Online Store, are not account wide. THough yes, I feel lupin will still bring in a good amount of Fantasia sales.
I think if people want something "new" and "exotic", maybe a plant or elemental sort of person. Something that is more alien compared to what has become the standard for the races.
I can see people wanting something like that but I honestly prefer something that's been already introduced in the game and not come out of no where. With Square bringing FF14 original classes to Evercold, I think it'd be neat if they explore the idea of bringing Lupin since they are a FF14 original as well (as far as I know)
Did some messy mockups of this idea for fun

Pretty much just chop shopping existing hair and trying to have it blend with their body fur! They could be really selective and only include parts of the hair required to look good. Doubt it would be as simple as it sounds, but its an idea ^^
Hrothgar based on endgame census remains one of the least used races in the game so I am unsure whether they want to go through the trouble of making another beast race.
If I were in charge and were willing to make a concession, my idea would be to add beast races but maybe give them far fewer glam options, like different looks for light armor/heavy armor and robes, but not thousands of sets.
