I like your edit. Maybe it's because I'm so used to a single highlight on the eye we have now. The new highlight looks like multiple sources of light and has strong blurred edges, making it seem like the character has cataracts. It's especially noticeable on characters with larger eyes like femiqo, femau ra, and Lalafells.
The only solution is to change gamma adjustment from default 50
to 0
sure everything looks darker, but at least the irises are not as jarringly gray.
Still, does Square Enix does not know how eyes work? :D Irises need to be dark since eyes are camera obscura.
im confussed what does it mean by articial eye?

I honestly see no difference between the 2 myself
New light's better, they better not change it.
As some suggested, turn gamma down to 0 to saturate colors, specially darker tones on eyes and hair.
You can see the catchlights because they upgraded the lighting, which wasn't there before. The problem is they also added back the old catchlight because of feedback and the new lighting which produces the "new" catchlights meaning you have twice the amount of catchlights in the eye and both of these catchlights do not follow the same rules, they each do their own thing. I don't know if this makes sense.
The answer was adding the new lighting and not bring back the old catchlights.
The first benchmark has two sets of catchlights that operate on two different sets of rules also, though the 'permanent' set isn't nearly as strong as in the new benchmark. It's just a pain in the butt to see them, because the lighting in Original Flavor chargen is so bad. I had to shoot the camera up my character's nose to get the environmental lights to show up on his eyes.
In the new benchmark, the lighting has been changed and moved around so it's easier to see the environmental lights at the same time as the (much stronger) permanent light in our eyes. Strengthening the permanent light was probably necessary to fix issues caused by the fact that FFXIV isn't ray traced so our character's eyes don't reflect as much light as they naturally would. Though it does result in characters with large open eyes seeing a whole lot of pinprick sparkles in their eyes. On my character, who has small, deep-set eyes, it all looks fantastic.
ETA: Just adding this because I seriously love what they've done with the eyes, with the sclera reflections and all so now you all have to see how good the new eye lighting looks on my Highlander
