I fear that moniker has been hijacked since it was first introduced in...UO I think? Back in EverQuest it just meant your character. We also used Damage Dealer, too, since that was ye olden times before parsers were really a thing and the damage of the party was not as important since the tank, healer, and crowd control were much more important. We actually used to make fun of people if they just zerged something like when a bunch of guilds got together and tried zerging The Sleeper by dying and respawning over and over and over. It is funny how things like that evolve.

The purpose of a language is to get other people to understand you. DPS has been the term since Everquest days. We all know what DPS means. DPS is both a noun and a verb. Language evolves.

Started EQ in 1999 when it released and on my server we used DPS not DD.

What, are you a floating number on a screen? Are you the digits on a combat log? Because THAT's the Damage Per Second.
And the one who does it is, in fact, all roles. And a role specializes on it: the Damage Dealer.

I think the funniest part about this whole thread is that your point isnt even true. The numbers that float on your screen and show up in the combat log are not dps numbers.
