[Rant] Square's recent IP sales to invest in blockchain have me worried.

NFT's already hit there peak and have been steadily declining, you can actually directly trace the decline over the last several months.

The windows already closed. You can see it every where, the one actual NFT game Axis infinity is hemorrhaging players and money, Ubisoft already backpedaled and ripped the NFT's out of another, etc.

If your active on twitter, you definitely have noticed how NFT's went from being unescapable early in the year to near irrelevancy now.

Basically, I have no doubt Square will try in some form, but the ship has sailed already, and I bet at least part of the reason they keep bringing it up is to please idiot investors because its still there favorite buzzword for "MONEY" atm.

I kinda doubt they will ever even manage to build a big NFT venture even if they want to, and if they do it will fail.

Tomb Raider was their second most profitable ip behind FF

My guess is its because the same studio responsible for TR made Marvels Avengers

Ah the old EA-style cycle. Force a company to implement a new monetisation model at the expense of gameplay, then punish them when the monetisation model doesn't perform as well as projections based on some rival companies project that already saturated the market.

My concern, even though Mr. Yoshida has said that NFTs will never come to FFXIV, is that our subscription money will be used to invest in NFTs. I really hope they change course on this subject of investing in NFTs and move away from it.

It seems strange to me, that if the goal was to have more capital to invest in blockchain, cloud, and ai (or whatever the CEO said) to sell the entire western division (or a majority of it) for so little. Tomb Raider alone could have fetched close to 300 mil if not more. Deus Ex is a dormant franchise, as is Legacy of Kain. Also releasing Hitman which granted isn’t the most profitable but is a well known franchise.

Plus all the assets and property and other such things those companies have.

This seems more like a streamline and centralization of company assets then any real move to make up capital for some new business venture. Ill-fated or not, and generally the creative teams have almost full control of what they are or are not willing to do in terms of gaming systems. CBU3 is under board member Naoki Yoshida’s control and he will not do anything that would alienate his playerbase.

Nomura will always do Nomura things and then you have creators like Yoko Taro.. the man literally marches to the beat of his own drum. Remember the last time the CEO mentioned a push to block chain, Yoshida cane out not long after and said “not in xiv” .. so all in all, its just smoke until something concrete happens. Then we can react.

I would not be surprised to see a full blown acquisition of SE by Sony and the liquidation and sale of the western division being a set up to streamline that process. Not a guarantee for sure but it’s not unfeasible.

I'm still not seeing a possible application of NFTs in a gaming environment that can't already be done without block chain

Yeah, the issue wasn't that Avengers was a live service game
It also wasn't the combat
It was that CD had no idea how to actually make a live service game.

The CEO doesn't care whether players have fun or not. He just wants us to contribute. How this will affect Yoshi P, the dev team and the game...time will tell. But it doesn't bode well for any of us.
