While i agree that FFXI was a mess at the start, the difference to FFXIV is in focus and attachment. In FFXI i identified with my world and city. I was part of it and could actively change it.
1. I would do missions to get RANK for MY CITY which introduced me to many colorfull and funny characters.
2. I would collect crystals for crafting and to increase RANK points for MY CITY to get new Quests.
3. I would take over zones to get the Outpost Teleport for MY CITY to make traveling easier and win the weekly Conquest.
4. I would almost automatically roleplay my character feeling pride for MY CITY.
These are just some examples that made FFXI what it is now, a great game. FFXIV has nothing even remote that makes me feel attached to any of the cities, NPC's or areas. It is just soulless content with no purpose at all.
Get back to the roots, tell stories and make me feel like i am part of something bigger. Give us back that feeling of achievment we had when we did Zilart missions or worked on our Limit breaks and AF.
This is what i also feel. No conection to the city Ul'dah and the world. The fact that you can lvl from 1-50 in the same area is boring. FFXI made you go out into the world and i wanted to. I love to explore a new area's in that game. FFXIV once you have been to all 5 areas and their dungeons/caves thats it. Everything is pretty, just realy boring.
Honest to God, I found it to be the opposite in most of my XI parties. Most JP players would up and leave without finding a replacement, while NA and EU players did. (One explanation a friend of mine gave was that the JP's find it rude to assume a party would continue, while NA/EU players found it rude to not replace yourself.) This lead to a lot of frustration between JP and Western players.
Honestly, although actually playing XI was more enjoyable for me, looking at this game get updated and changed is even more entertaining than it was in XI. I've gotten to love updates in XI, and what Yoshida is doing is pretty kick-ass for someone like me. Now if the game was already good it would be even better, but I guess you can't get everything!
I played XI from NA launch til the day the servers got shut down and I have made tons of JP friends through parties. One thing that seperates their parties from ours is I have WAY more fun in them then I do with NA players. 90% of the time I am talking to myself while partying or just mindlessly mashing away at mobs, in JP parties they do crazy stuff, talk alot even though I understand none of it andits a friendly atmosphere instead of felling as if my party member daydream of snapping my neck the whole time.
BUT I have partied with my share of "bad apples" they are wild, uncooperative, even when the other JP players talk to them they agro mobs that were of no threat to the party then leave when we wipe. So its about 70/30 JP players are nicer when you get to know them but once you piss them off your on their shit list for life!
They're not afraid to use their blacklist, I see....
Does anyone actually put people into their blacklist? I haven't found anyone who is really aggravating enough to scrawl their name into the list....
