But you lose width for height right?

They say you can tell a man's monitor size by measuring the tip of his index finger to the tip of his thumb.
It's still 16:9 (1.77:1) so no you really don't. You can only have it so wide till it loses it's benefits.
The landscape method is more popular because majority of users use old TN based monitors.
The only real games where having such wide ratios will help you would be RTS type games.
Shooting games? No unless you're quite a good distance from the screen to see all three monitors at once or constantly move your head left or right your head will often be focused at the center screen and by the time you see someone on the far right or left screen you'll be shot down.
There's also Game UI, some game don't support such wide ratios properly and can have the UI too far apart. For example, health bar on the upper left corner of the left screen and ammunition on the lower right corner pf the right screen.
Then there's desk space but that's self explanatory.
You don't catch many 15 inchers that do 1920x1080.... nice
5760x1080 in a game like Final Fantasy. I'd rather see more of the peripheral vision landscape than more sky and ground
As long as the game supports 5760x1080 you shouldn't have any texture issues.
going portrait, you might as well have one screen
One more vote for playing on a TV. I play on a 47 inch 3d-ready sony, and with the GTX 580's mini HDMI, it's absolutely been a wonderful experience at 1080p.
My hope is that one day the game adds 3d technology as an option, as was shown off in FFXIV tech demos before 1.0 was even released. NVIDIA does have software that allows 3d-ready televisions to get the same 3d effect that a traditional 3d computer monitor has. Yet even without the 3d, playing on a television is something that I could never do without once getting used to it. Everything is gorgeous and so detailed, it's amazing.
I was getting at kinda what Rydin said. I use 5760x1080 for the landscape, yes FFXIV doesn't support it, but I think it will in the future. Where has the portrait way, you look like you just have one big monitor with spaces in the middle.
The only problem is, FFXIV doesn't support it yet. Though I have high hopes.
Please do show me these over 1920x1080 TVs. I know they've been working on something close to 4k x 2.2k or along those lines, but the few out are enormously expensive. Monitors are the only ones i've seen do 2560x1440 or 2560x1600. with a TV you just normally have no use for those resolutions without video formats that run that high of a res.

Using my 46" LED , I play in the living room. If you are sittign close you don't want it too big. Just your lookign forward field of view. PRob in 26-32" range depending on distance from face. unless multi display then smaller.
