I ran across a reasonable suggestion that I like in one of the other threads.
Posted by Naylia:
I should be able to visit a desk with an NPC and inquire about goods available around the world. However I should have to pay a tax, duty, and/or delivery cost to have the goods imported to me. http://forum.square-enix.com/ffxiv/t...tem-idea/page2
I think this is a good idea. Couple this delivery feature and global AH, with area specific resources. The combination of my desire for a more complex working economy, and ease of access to goods.
This is a good way to give the market more depth and life, as well as giving people better access to goods around the world. Also fixes the low population issue.

In addition, if they want peeps to visit other cities, why not have city specific retainers for a market ward system or for an AH, allow you to sell say 7 items per city AH. That would encourage people to visit and sell in other cities. For buying, a fee to ship other cities' ward/AH items is a good idea.
