What is FFXIV trying to BE?

I bet most of the people claiming they won't play due to NCsoft will play eventually, anyway. Peer pressure is a powerful thing, and if the majority of other people are playing GW2 they probably will also. lol

I hate NCsoft with a burning passion... however, I realize NCsoft's separation from Arena Net. People act like NCsoft is influencing Guild Wars 2's development, when in reality they have nothing to do with it (other than funding Arena Net).

My opinion of what FFXIV's original design, or at least Tanaka's design is closer to an online FF13.

Stamina is closer to FF13's ATB gauge, where some attacks, such as ones that target multiple foes or potentially deal more damage, require more of the ATB gauge. Instead the computer controlling other party members, it would be just players. And we get to reposition ourselves in battle. And combat roughly would take place the same speed as FF13, and Battle Regiments seem to be built around this speed.

And in FF13, one character wasn't locked into a single role. They could switch roles almost on the fly and try to form a team that complimented each other. Depending on the encounter, you had to switch tactics accordingly and have characters take on different roles. Although challenges were designed around three party members, rather than fifteen or just one person.

Right now, it seems like FFXIV is going to reach where FF6, FF7, FF10, and FF12 reach which is, at the higher levels, your characters hit as hard as anyone else, have all the same spells and abilities, and maybe use one or two unique abilities such as Runic, Blitz, or specialized Limit Break.

The crafting scheme finally hit in the right direction of a more player driven economy. Where players pretty much determined the value of gil more than the game. The reliance on crafters to obtain better gear is a much desired element for me as most MMOs, you can typically find anything in the field or a quest that is equal to or better than crafted items. To me, that made crafting seem less valuable, more worthless, unless you were crafting consumables or otherwise unattainable goods. SE did great here, with each major patch making this even more delicious.

So yeah, in summary a multiplayer FF13 with interdependent and involved crafting.

It's not an irrational phobia. I have no desire to ever give that company another dime, so that means removing myself from anything that will provide them with money. It's more of a boycott issue.

It's pointless trying to argue with the OP D: he's been on the forums from the beginning doing nothing but complain about the game. He's not even trying to fix it, just complain about it. I am actually surprised he hasn't been banned by a mod yet (hint hint mods if you can see this). I seriously think he works for like Blizzard or something xD why else would someone who hates this game post nonstop on the forums.. I mean.. I love this game and he has 3x more posts than I do!!

I don't hate the game entirely. I mean, I like crafting and the armory system.

But regardless of my feelings on the game at present, I would like to know if it's something I could begin to like in the future. And I can't know that until I understand SE's vision for the game?

Above, someone said it was FF13 + craftville, but I'm not so sure that answers my question. And even if it did, a clone of FF13 and Vanguards crafting system isn't very "visionary", so if that's the case, then no wonder the game is failing.

I guess that makes more sense now.

But I'm pretty sure NCsoft won't miss your patronage, considering you are but one person. So again, they aren't really losing anything, but you might be (if the game turns out to be good, for example).

Proposals for japanese games tend to be very simple and sometimes dont make a lot of sense. I believe the one for Gran Turismo was "I want to drive my car on my tv" written on a piece of paper or so the rumor goes.

The philosophy might have just been "I want to play final fantasy...on the internet"

What SE wanted to make: A game that was less time consuming with alot more fredom then their first mmo. A new world we never seen, and new ways of inter acting with this world.

Pretty much all RPG are all the same you level up a character play through the story through questing and killing creatures in oder to save the world in some sort of fashion.
in ffxiv we all must do our parts as a community to get ready for the upcoming danger then do our parts to fight it.

Thats my understand on where SE coming from. They adding rp to the rpg that was slowly lost.

And by more freedom as in to make your own class rather then the cookie cutter builds.

the bad ratings were true in this case though most real gamers dont at all listen to reviews and bias ratings but i think the FF fans are pretty united in the fact that those poor ratings and reviews were not to far off. this game proves that new isnt always better not every new idea is a better one, sometimes if something is said to have never been seen/done/tried its for a good reason.

I always thought numerical scores were a poor measure of a personal opinion, that being said if you actually read the reviews they slam this game pretty harshly even in the few sites that gave the game great scores.

edit: also what new ideas do we have besides the armory system,which is like the only critically praised feature.

I know right.

A slow & unresponsive battle system isn't new, neither is exhausting grind and minimal quests with no rewards or goals other than getting gear.
