The game has always had religious undertones and it was really brought to the forefront in Endwalker, especially when you get to Thavnair. The explanation of Tempering pretty much means forced conformation to the ideology of a religion.

I'm still floored that Vauthy's parentage was half-human, half-divine. And that his main form of worship was all his followers eating bread, which turned out to literally be divine flesh.
And yet nobody seemed to even notice the parallels, let alone get offended.

If your god dropped a glowing sword you damn well sure I will farm them. No loot drop you good then. Protect your gods do not give them loot.

When they are summoned they are known by some characters as false gods, a mock representation of their gods that isn't entirely the same and harms the land. Each beast tribe has some beast tribe quests which explore how a small portion of the tribe disagrees with the god having been summoned and how they see it as a mockery of their beliefs.

The Garleans particularly in ARR represent a criticism of militant intervention policies, especially American militarism.

The blatant religious skepticism throughout Final Fantasy as a series, not just XIV, is a hallmark of the franchise.

People are right to be skeptical of religion.
