Your comparison would be more apt if it was a used car then yes I'd expect some issues, this isn't a brand new game & has issues tied to that core but it ain't a horrible expansion launch given the sheer number of new players we've had join over last few months.

I'd be more upset if MMOs and their expansions were known for buttery smooth launches and this was some sort of exception to that rule.

But it's not, we all knew it would be bad. To compare it to the first analogy in the OP, if the people selling me the car straight up told me the handle would be funky as all hell, then no, I wouldn't really be mad with them.

It depends on how bad the total history is. Se has a rather great history.

You must be like 10 years old or something. SE hasn't had a good history for a lot of players for a very long time. FF7 was the last universally liked FF game. 8,9 were very divisive. 10(lol)11(Rofl) 12(Great game, ruined by man boy) 13(The worst) 14( Version 1?????) 15( literally linear garbage with out DLC, and the worst combat system to date)

If you want to bring in the phone remasters and steam remasters as well you can pretty much pick any of them that weren't the pixel remasters and give them a solid 2/10. Even a good portion of the pixel remaster have huge issues + they are missing the extra content from the PSP and GBA releases.

They only extreme content SE has ever released was their extremely predatory Gacha games.

False equivalency. The product is not broken, there's an issue with the service. Nor are these realistic examples. Server congestion is realistic. I mean, you can get a faulty engine on a brand new car but not in an online video game. You can get double booked at a hotel but not a video game. So there are problems unique to each.

I don't generally defend gaming companies if it's not warranted, Cyberpunk 2077 was released way too early, Hello Games lied about No Man's Sky, EA just manage to keep doing all the bad things, Ubisoft love releasing buggy games and harassing staff, Blizzard have been terrible in recent years with WoW and there's the whole you know, abysmal practices in their workplace.

So why do I defend the FFXIV dev team on this one? Not Square Enix, but the FFXIV dev team.

Because
a) I've played MMO's for a long time, rocky launches are synonymous with popular MMO launches. I've seen in FFXIV, I've seen it in WoW, it happened in New World, I've even seen it in SW:TOR (except it was server stability not log in issues, we couldn't even beat Gharj in full Rakata gear)
b) We know WHY there is a problem, the best solution to the problem is not something they're in a position they can do something about. It boils down to too many people not enough server capacity. And the same reason so many cars are not being sold due to missing electronics is the same reason they cannot acquire new servers.
c) They've been transparent about point 'b'.
d) They're actively trying to alleviate the problem. And tried to prepare for it. Simply put, they're making their servers do more than they should.
e) We know the dev team give a crap, we know how passionate they actually are. Though that does not free them from criticism, I at least try to keep it constructive and actually try to understand things from their side too. The dev team aren't some cold heartless entity at odds with their customer base.
f) The dev team actually read the forums for feedback and therefore the crap people post.
g) People are acting like Karens over it. If they didn't, I'd probably empathise over the frustrations better. I've experienced the issues, my friends have been experiencing the issues, though I've had more luck because I am an EU player on a US server. None of us have directed our frustration at the dev team - even the less fortunate US folk I play with haven't. Yet none of us hold them on some special pedestal free from criticism.

Seriously, i can not understand the white knighting for SQEX. They are neigher a small company nor they are unexperienced. They should know what is coming and how to prevent it. The 7 days refund will cost them money and there are many bad news about the launch in the internet. And the funny thing is, the launch of Rift: Planes of Telara was way smoother. The hype was also huge and Trion was completly unexperienced about MMO launches. It is possible to have a good start of a game/expansion.

If you're on here just to insult people because your in queue and frustrated like all the rest of us are, than you need to go hang your hat somewhere else. Your not helping or contributing anything but to listen to your own bark. Snarling and nipping at others because you disagree. If you have a counter point show some civility and stop insulting. Then maybe somebody can take what you say seriously.

SE is appropriately being called out for the server queue crashes. And they were appropriately called out for their less than stellar Stormblood launch.

I work in the auto industry, I have a friend who works in the tech industry. Both of our jobs are having huge issues due to the semiconductor shortage, so I know that when SE says they literally can't get new servers, they aren't lying.

I won't even be able to play the game at all over this week due to when I get off of work since the queue will be far too big. I started playing the game at 5 am over the weekend and couldn't log out since I wouldn't be able to log back in. Due to that, I can't really enjoy the story all that much. It's like Stormblood all over again with me. I can tell the story is good, but due to how I'm forced to play the game, I'm unable to really get into the story. If I wait to play it, I'll encounter spoilers so I can't just hold off.

In summary:

The chip shortage is very real

If you know how a business works then you'd know they wouldn't have servers available until they felt they were necessary.

There are FAR too many people playing at the same time. More than the current servers have the capacity to contain.

It's also very much ruining my experience of Endwalker.

However I don't blame SE, instead I blame all the players who refuse to not play so I can instead. :p

You just have to watch it and relog quickly if a 2002 hits. I've seen my fair share of launches where even the smallest misstep meant you couldn't play at all until a server reset
