I have played both WoW and FFXIV since their launches, and I like both games. However, since Ion took over at WoW, they are obsessed with player-engagement/retention metrics. You can feel the systems in that game tugging at your time and punishing you for taking long breaks/hiatuses. That's why every other post on WoW's General Discussion Forums is "I'm cancelling my sub over [blank]...". They are trying to get the devs attention by threatening the only thing it feels like the dev team cares about - time/money spent ingame. Yoshi P basically nipped this in the bud when he publicly encouraged FFXIV players to take breaks, spend time with family/friends, and play other games.
Those two opposing viewpoints alone are why I consider FFXIV to be my home game. The dev team respects my time so much more than Blizzard.
