So people aren't spending the Poetics they already have, and the solution is......let them have more Poetics they'll forget to spend? I don't get it.

much of the time it isn't that they forget to spend them, they just don't wanna interrupt whatever they are doing to teleport to some play in the hinterlands to spend for for something useful every 2000 tomestones. if the cap was not 2000, then they could just spend them whenever they are nearby. and again, there is no purpose to the cap. it doesn't do anything as far as I can see.
As I said in a different response - in my case at least, it's a desire to be able to afford a full set of gear for a new job that I'm in the process of leveling, especially as we keep getting more jobs that start at 50/60/70/etc rather than from 1.
2k is not enough for a full set of gear; you will have to choose one side or the other and be left to either piecemeal some stuff together for the rest until you can afford more (which can be annoying if you want to be running stuff ON that job, for EXP as well as poetics), or wait until it's fully geared before jumping into roulettes with it, wasting EXP that the job could have been gaining.
Increasing the cap, at least to where we could be holding enough for a full set of gear (be it Ironworks, Shire, Scaevan, what have you), would honestly be a nice QoL. It isn't going to prevent people from running roulettes for poetics or for EXP just because they have a full set of gear for w/e level they're at, so the cap just feels a little arbitrary at this point.
Can't speak for others, though. But I don't think it would hurt anything to have it increased.
The 2k limit is there to prevent significant prefarming for a future use, such as a relic. If the cap was to be raided, the costs of the future uses would have to be raised as well to prevent that step from being "too easy" for those who have their tomes at the new cap, while it would disproportionately affect those who are using them.
These kind of decisions are not done lightly and are never as easy as they seem.
I would rather see the costs of old gear reduced to the point you can buy a full set with 2k.
Someone asked this back in 2016, Yoshida said that they way it was coded and server memory issue prevented this. I am no IT person, so I am going to take his word on this.
The tome counters are either an int or a short and the value is either signed or unsigned. The smallest of these, signed short, would still allow the number to reach 32,767 and because of how bytes work, it would have no additional load on the servers. It's purely a balancing decision to keep it at 2k.
Honestly? I'd be fine with that.
I still think the cap is arbitrary and a little pointless regardless of intended use, but if 2k is a hard-coded thing or a direct choice for tomestones then simply reducing gear price for each prior endgame vendor would be fine. That's honestly the biggest issue I think people have with the poetics cap.
