please God just call it port

its not solely the name, its the fact that the mechanic is very quick, more so than calofisteri who they copy from, and they added a little curve to it, so if you are behind it you have less reaction time due to needing to walk more. Eh, tbh though this tier turned me off from the game a little, the larboard thing is just one of the ways the fights aren't fun for me.

Im totally unfamiliar with nautical terms and always have a mental block with starboard and port anyway and would have to remind myself which was which prior to going into the fight regardless, but using a word that’s very visually similar to starboard instead of port just adds an extra layer of hesitation for a decision needing to be made in split seconds.

Not that it helps with the fight in any way but a nice way for remembering which is which in real life is memorizing that both "port" and "left" are only 4 letters each.

There's a very good reason why larboard isn't used anymore. Larboard sounds too similar to Starboard so it's easy to mishear if there's a lot of ambient noise (e.g., during a storm). So, larboard became port. I really wish they used port. If you've got any lag, the cast time is so quick that it's hard to get on the proper side if you don't recognize it quick enough (larboard isn't just audibly similar to starboard, it's visually similar too). I had a lot of lag in Alphascape yesterday and 3.0 was a big problem because of it.

The mechanic isn't too quick, you are just doing it wrong. The idea is not to look for the telegraphed attack, but rather anticipate the move ahead of time. So if he says starboard, he will always be facing "north", so you go to the right. At this point you should be preparing for the next mechanic. In your head you should think "this spot is larboard if he turns". He will then turn, and if it is larboard then you stay put.

The problem people have is that they try to do this entire thought process during the cast of star/lar and that as you say, would not be enough time. In reality you have plenty of time to work out the logistics of your next move ahead of time. Its a 50/50 choice at the end of the day.

I'm not having a dig at you btw, I thought it was too quick too until I figured out how to do it, and now it isn't very difficult. Think of it like O10 than a traditional attack.

They should just go all in and change it to Steorbord and Ladebord.

Honestly, I am surprised how few people have heard of larboard but as someone that loves etymology, I am familiar with a lot of antiquated words and terms.

Anyways, I kind of feel that this was intentional to make the challenge about quick pattern recognition and wouldn't be surprised if they avoided using left/right or port/starboard because they wanted it to be a bit more difficult to parse, but then again that does make it more obfuscated than the implementations in other languages. If they do color-code the words or effects, they definitely need to make starboard green and port/larboard red.

While starboard and larboard are very similar, don't focus on the whole word and just look solely at the beginning letters while ignoring the rest of the word. So instead of thinking "okay it's larboard then starboard", think " okay it's L and then S". It'll make your life a lot easier by filtering out all the similarities that can muddy up your ability to quickly discern them.
Also smart positioning based on the boss is of course necessary. Look at the way he is facing and position yourself accordingly.

As for remembering what sides equates to what, what I use is that star = steer and most people are right-handed and so you steer with your right hand, hence starboard is on the right. The explanation is a bit long, but you get used to it and it gets shortened in your brain quite easily.
Then if star is right, then port is the other side which is left.

EDIT/TLDR:

Sorry for repeating myself but here is a visual explanation of a super easy way to make this not a problem.

Larboard -> L-> Left (the letter even matches up with the direction!)
Starboard -> S -> Right

Basically stop taking in the whole word and making it harder on yourself.

This is a problem since it not only involves a fast mechanic of seeing what way Omega is facing and reading what mechanic it's doing, but also it means doing mental translation of nautical terms (most of us are unfamiliar with) to normal terms. I don't see the problem with right laser sword and left laser sword like Cruise Chaser had.

um..he only gives a second or so to parse "he is saying starboard" and then to move. As soon as i see it in the cast bar i need to recognize which side, that's the issue. there's no anticipation, you react to his cast, and he can and will change the usage; he has done two larboards in a row, for example.

The only reason I knew the term "larboard" was because I used to work at Disney World and rode Pirates of the Caribbean a lot. During the "wife" auction, the auctioneer tells the captive woman to show off her larboard side. http://pirates.wikia.com/wiki/Auctioneer

Very much this along with the sideways turn and his face looking almost the same as his rear. Does he always face to the left?

I used to work at a marina, and I've never heard the left side referred to as anything other than "port" on a boat. This ability also makes me increasingly wonder if I might be a functioning dyslexic... Even if I know the meanings behind the words, if I get mixed up for even a second it's usually too late for me once by the time it occurs to me to correct things. I had moments during Tsukuyomi Ex's blades, but at least that fight gave enough time for me to get back on track if I got mixed up. Meh, I'm sure I'll be able to mitigate and work past the mechanic enough to not get hit often, but changing it from "larboard" to "port" would make it a lot easier for me to keep the directions straight in my head. Not that they will change it, of course...
