It's here for fun, cause I was bored a bit running a few Omegas and noticed a big influx of commends so made a positive post of the forums so it's not all doom and gloom here. People also apparently like answering given the amount of responses.

I give comms out randomly at the end of whatever content I run. the only exception is if I say I will only give it to a DPS. I switched to WHM midway through Heavensward and can honestly say that playing as a healer gets me more comms than when I play as RDM, BRD, or WAR
I actually find in Mentor Roulette I get more than anywhere else...and that's not always doing anything other than going through the run(many times not even talking). Though...there are times where I say one thing(exact quote from last night "...Easiest mentor rou ever!" due to getting Praetorium, 46min in progress, and when I load it they are already fighting last boss - 4 comms for just saying that), and get comms, but equally there are times I don't get anything.
I get more comms as a dps than a tank (main) or healer (old main)
And I will never understand why....
More on my WHM for sure. I almost always get at least 2 when running running things like Expert roulette.
I do appreciate the comms I get on my RDM more though. Someone took the time to notice that lowly little DPS and thought they deserved some credit!
I have noticed I tend to get more commends as Ranged DPS more than Melee though. Not sure why.
I always make sure to use my aggro tools properly (Shadewalker/Smoke Bomb), and TA when it's up to make sure stuff dies fast enough.
I just kinda show up as my MCH or Archer (haven't gotten BRD yet) and I just get thrown commends like roses to a bull fighter.
I get many comms as tank, healer, or DPS, but... Yeah, I feel like it's pretty random. Sometimes I'm doing an excellent job as a WAR and I get no comms, sometimes I just get sleepy and brainlag through most of the dungeon, and I get 3. Same as healer, and, for twelves' sakes, same as DPS. And it's frustrating to get more comms for being a sleepy BRD that just uses 4 skills (Note that I don't say BRD is a simple class, it's just that I am more "lazy" with it, since it's... probably my tenth favorite class, so yeah) than for being a NIN that does his very best.
I pretty much feel like comms are given at random. And that's pretty much how I give comms myself. If nobody really stands out by doing something great, or playing its job to the fullest, or simply being nice and chatty, I give comms to... the best glamour, or the job i'm leveling these days, or whatever. It's almost never tanks, though, since as a Main Tank myself, I'm very critic of them.
I get more as my main, though plenty as my off class.
Main is Tank, off is healer.
Yeah, switching to another class has helped a lot in keeping me interested in the game. Although the one I picked was RDM since I enjoy it's mostly random based on what does/doesn't proc and one's white/black magic levels play style. I'm not good at remembering or not messing up some complex jobs 20+ button rotations, so RDM fits me best. It's been nice to just follow someone for a change instead of being the trail blazer all the time. I plan to keep PLD as my main, since I enjoy it and tanking to much, but RDM will be a nice "taking a break" job to have on the side for those times I feel to tired and want to trade fast queues for laid back gameplay. And I just came back from a 2 month break to play MH:W, so that parts covered already. ^^;
My main SMN gets the most I always get between 2-3 comms when I run it most likely becuase the class itself is so aoe efficient that it can make a bad player seem amazing...not saying I'm a bad player lol but yea you get it.
