I could have sworn you pick the gender of your chocobo when you first complete the quest for it. But that could've just been in 1.0

Eh makes little difference to me. I named my chocobo Papi after a certain harpy. She's a girl to me and always will be. I wouldn't pay too much attention hard cannon on trivial things like this. I mean hell I was a popoto for a while during my adventures. No way to explain that lore wise XD

Maybe it'll be addressed if we ever get any further content pertaining to our chocobo companions.

I think it's high time they got a bit of an update somehow, and not just in regards to their questionable AI.

I honestly never noticed. Never bothered me.

And there we have it. Plus, while some other chocobo mounts do call them male in their description, others keep it neutral. So for all we know, some others may be female. It could be up to the player to decide those ones!
But the company chocobo is strictly a male, that much is for certain.

I can confirm that the quest was almost identical to 2.0's.
They specifically mention it as male back then. It was the lore as to why 1.0 launch didn't even have chocobos at all. There weren't enough for adventurers to have. Once the patch came in with them (as I still remember the teaser video with the music...) they specifically ask what you'll name him.

"Papi" sounds masculine already. Papi = daddy.
