Regardless of whether or not it was user error, the billing system has two REALLY bad things going for it:
1) It's not accepted in certain international countries. This needs to be addressed IMMEDIATELY.
2) The billing user interface is convoluted. I figured it out after clicking around and reading stuff, but that's the problem with the billing user interface. IT SHOULD NOT BE DIFFICULT TO GIVE SQUARE YOUR MONEY. Whether these extraneous charges the OP got was due to user error (which is entirely possible because of the convoluted system) OR due to a billing system that's placing erroneous charges, this also needs to be addressed.
The amount of menus that you have to dig through for billing is ridiculous, and Square splitting up the "basic" fee from the "character" fee makes it even worse. Like I've said before, I get a feeling whatever team was responsible for the horrible FFXIV UI was partially responsible for the design of the billing system - navigating through these menus reminds me of launch day XIV where you had to dig through hordes of menus just to get one thing done.
Anyway OP, I think a last ditch effort is to speak to a manager when you talk to their CSRs - if the manager can't help, then yeah, get your credit card company's help and dispute the charges. Two threads talking about the exact same thing happening made me double check my credit card account in fear of getting hit by these charges myself. -

I agree the situation is somewhere between 4 and 399907 kinds of messed up. This is a particular fecal storm that should have been taken care of way before it was a issue. But here we are, people who want to log in can't because something was Half assed again. The single most iconic hallmark of the entire debacle that is xiv.
I am not blaming the dev team, or the rest of the wonderful people who are working there asses off to get this ship back on track. the vitriol is being spewed directly at the jackasses in charge of the account management and setting up the payment systems. I mean seriously there are people who want to give your company money. Why are you making it so damned difficult?
Also the character required to play the game Should be factored into the Bleeping service fee. Basic service with out a included character is about as useful as tits on a bull. Fecal storm 2 is popping up due to this.
Some one needs to go bust some heads in the correct department. Or better, they should get payed in Bananas or used Coffey filters until this mess is set right. Just to remind them that they are actively denying money to the company. And at the same time they are managing to find new depths to sink xiv and the company's reputation too.

No problems with billing people just dont want to use the methods we have been given because they have read something from someone they dont know which holds no weight.
Link me to 2 official investigations against C&B saying they are shady and I will retract all my statements.
People have payment options they just dont want to use them, not SE's fault (I know others were promised and arent here but that isnt what we are complaining about right now) -

01-07-2012, 08:50 AMDelsusThat guy that posted the pic said nothing, just posted a pic that showed no crysta options, I have never seen the C&B logo with a red cross through, but it allowing the option, they didnt say C&B was not available for them, I assumed they had photoshopped the cross in because they didnt want to use them, there was no text in that post, so until I see otherwise I am still saying it is because they dont want to use C&B because of what nobodies have said online. SE should care. It is not as if they are some prestige selling some product that is extremely limted (like jsk lol). The way their CS reminds me of how chanel would act if a bum walked into their store.
All I have seen all day is threads of people complaining (and they have the right to do so) about how payments not working, how many mistakes there have been, blah blah. If they are so eager to charge us now they should have all the payments set up properly and read to go.
I am glad I have not been unlucky enough to have this issue with them. -
