Would be a nice feature to add to the game, but only as an optional sidequest series. Ideally, create a handful of characters specifically for it, as using existing plot characters wouldn't work very well as pointed out in an earlier post. Plus, if you have a bunch of new characters created specifically for this, they can be properly fleshed out with the usual array of romance archetypes (both serious and comedic).
Alternatively, just create a sidequest where you romance one of your two "free" retainers. Obviously would require numerous improvements to the retainer system (especially fleshing out the existing retainer personalities, or just tossing those out and creating new ones from scratch), but would involve a whole lot less work than creating an entire cast of new characters. Ultimately, would also just be the better option simply because it would allow the player to design their own romantic interest, rather than hoping one of the Squeenix-created ones matches their desire.

All the people (players) you see in game are supposed to be Warrior of Light, a single person, that means every single character can have a love interest about the same NPC, no one will care!...
I would like to marry my retainers personally, but some cavemen oppose to the idea when clearly it wouldn't have any impact on the game, if anything it would benefit FFXIV by increasing the income from weddings!...
Not everyone wants to marry another player, I definitely don't want to and the more options we have the better the game will be!... :) -

My characters love interest is her wife. Besides that, the only two people I'd want her with are Merlwyb and Moenbryda. At least Merlwyb is still possible.

They will always be present in your home/apartment, and you can do other romantic things with them while in your home.
At any rate I still don't think such a thing could be written in an appealing way since "West" audiences basically just see it as another quest. -

They had something kinda similar in 1.0 where you where best buds with another "chosen" like you, like someone else mentioned. I liked that idea and I don't see why they couldn't implement it in game, I mean if you want to marry a player marry a player if you want to marry an NPC go for it, it's a game, anything can happen.

I'd quite like a quest series where you waifu Nanamo and take over Ul'daha. Could play into the Lolorito/turning it into a democracy thing too.
Could also be that you can romance any NPC and get different dialogue depending on how many other people are also waifuing them on your server.
