It's not the same thing. It's like being taxed. It's not a choice unless one considers obtaining the next rank as optional.

Obtaining rank should be based on performing work, service or accomplishing goals like missions or quests. (Quests are not necessarily military, btw.)

If you are rewarded with GC seals for your efforts, they should not take those away in order for you to achieve the next rank. It was done logically in FFXI when they had Mercenary ranks. I would prefer them to do it that way rather than their proposed change.

Although death and taxes are unavoidable, that does not mean that they are necessarily the same thing either.

Taxation without representation is Tyranny.

It is not a complaint, it is a suggestion to improve their product.

I don't see a problem with the action of using seals to rank up. But irl, if you paid your commanding officer to rank up in a military force it'd be bribery just saying. But FFXIV isn't real, and they figure with this new patch we'll have a lot of seals.

The only problem I have with this is that I already have the required seals to go to max rank. In other words, in terms of new content, this offers me next to none. According to the notes I just have to do one quest to max out my rank. I'm sure most people in these forums are in the same boat.

This is what I mean, just buying your rank is very different from earning it (XI's system) while yes you gain Assault Points and Nyzul Tokens, you don't buy your rank with it, you get a separate type of points in the process which goes towards your rank. So basically, promotions will go to those who can hold back on buying items and gear.

guess I am not the only in here find spent GC seal for rank up is normal

There should be "Rank Up" points which are accumulated separately from GC Seals.

It is not a good practice to reward players with one currency and then penalize them by taking away that currency. If it is a rank system then there should be a separate method of determining the experience or work completed towards gaining rank rather than taking the seals from the player.

I strongly urge Square Enix to rethink this change.

Yea, I can see this as being disappointing. Those who stockpiled GC seals basically only get a larger amount of GC seals they can stockpile now.

I actually would have preferred having to complete a quest before I could spend the seals to increase to the next rank.

You're right. I was talking more about a quest for every rank up, but you're right. Going from Corporal to Sergeant Third Class we've got a complete to quest.

Speaking of which, what follows corporal? Are there three ranks of that, or does it goes to another rank?
