While the OP should have known how the system works, and should have taken steps to prevent losing the house/furnishings if they had value to them, the system itself is awful and shouldn't exist in the first place. We were told, explicitly, that we would not have to log in to keep our houses, and SE reneged on that. SE made a series of poor decisions in their housing implementation, and the players continue to pay the price for it.
