Lackluster Graphics in FFXIV

Funny because that quite evidently applies to you, since you don't even know basic effects like bump and normal mapping. Or you compare the graphics of games belonging to completely different genres (and with completely different specs that have to be met by the engine).

There are several elements in that cutscene that show clearly that it's prerendered. The effects are mismatched with the models, and there isn't a PC, at the moment, that could fully render that scene in real time, with that polycount, level of detail and depth of field, at that resolution and with that framerate.

Cutscenes can be made and rendered in many way, while there's an engine base in that cutscene (otherwise it wouldn't be a tech demo), there are so many levels of prerendering that it isn't even funny.

The World Graphics - most notably in Limsa Lominsa - are very sub-par.

Light is allowed to shine through walls and objects. Buildings/Landscapes do not cast shadows or reflect on water like they should. The inside of helmets light up when it should be dark.

Repeating textures are worse than in world of warcraft - again, most notably on Limsa Lominsa cliffs.

FFXIV also has some of the ugliest water graphics of any game made in the last 10 years.

Comparing close up shots of other games to a far off shot of Limsa, it's like he's not even trying.

wait until we can jump into the lake or swim and see the physical...

but it will be a big cpu eater!

Should compare this game to TERA(Unreal Engine3) or Cabal2 (CryEngine3)

The graphics are pretty in XIV that is because they are SO MINIMAL. Its repeated which is low intensity, theres not a lot of objects so even less intensity which means it can have high res textures and nice scenic results but ultimately it all comes down to how creative the developer is.

For example their weather effects in some cases are horrible: For example Mor Dhona purple is so bad you can see the edge of the ring around your character and as you move the weather moves with you, its so bad. You cant really compliment the Rain or Snow because they just to fast and not solid enough to notice the bad qualities.

In all though the graphics in this game lack depth and creativity which is due to the bad design idea of creating long "seemless" zones
