Awesome comic! This SO reminds me my first days in XI (not nice memoriies though)...like taking over an hour to discover Windy Waters actually was composed of 2 different maps...or when, after a week after i met the person who would actually become my best friend both ingame and irl...he unequipped all gear (first reaction of 99% of those who started as mithra...i confess i did the same there too lol) and now wasn't being able to re-equip them.
I still have nightmares with the *Pwoooown* of lv down there...and how i ALWAYS leveled down every time, right after i leveled up...it was like there was a GM controlling goblins/skellies and stalking me just to hame me killed right after every lv up.
Luckly this dunes period was the best in FFXI...i played on Alexander, server of Ojin, the God of Dunes! I still think Ojin was a GM...it wasn't possible someone staying in dunes 24/7 for at least 3 years, just to help random players he never seen...like me. I met him when i died and a PT member tossed a /sh for raise...he came, raised me, PLed my PT until lv18 and then farmed the subjob items for me...and i know hunderd of players that experienced the very same...he just helped in dunes for free...and for years! I only started seeing him outside dunes after WotG was launched...by then he moved his help from dunes to besieged...started living in Al Zahbi, just raising and healing ppl.
Ojin was a saint for sure! ^^

It's indeed funny in a general way...but for those who played it and suffered the same fate it's specially fun (well...fun like would talking to a friend about how one year ago they went to a party, he got drunk and puked all your car when you were taking him home...only funny MUCH after that happened)! =P

I played FFXI at release but quit at about level 19 because I sucked at the game and couldn't get any higher than that (comes with being so young at the time, I think).
This mirrors my experience very closely. Right down to the blackmage... though my older sister was playing a WHM, so I didn't have the nightmare waiting-for-groups experience. -

That was the story of my life... taru blm from bastok getting my ass kicked by everything and being hated on by elvaan. And no one wanted me for a party in valkurm dunes... I remember my first walk through north gustaberg and made that same mistake of hitting the wall and having to circle back and go around though south gustaberg again.
Sure the game has time sinks. That's why I was able to happily play it from it's NA launch until ffxiv. There was different stuff to do, and lots of it. -
