The only problem with going ham on OP (not so much Unleash) is the TP drain, as you don't have access to Steel Cyclone/Decimate/IB/FC/Equilibrium yet. While it is more damage, you don't want to sit around waiting for your TP to regen between pulls. Generally just OP a few times and then focus on single target, you'll probably only be pulling 3 mobs at a time anyway.
Yeah... like some others have said, this is likely just a problem for PLD in the level 30-40 range, definitely not an issue for all tanks or all low-level content. I had never tanked in an MMO before I started leveling GLD for cross-classes for my DRK, yet despite that and how nervous I was, I had a negligible amount of trouble holding aggro. And yes; I didn't start tanking til after the change.
I did not tank low level in a while but i leveled thm, acn for whm cc resently and i was getting the aggro in few attacks e.g. in acn i spread dots on all enemies but doing so give me aggro on all mobs and in thm i had to stop DPSing so my aggro could go lower.
At low levels (as in below level 20) there are basically no VIT accessories. Those few that exist also have STR, so the changes of how VIT/STR adds to damage does not help.
Low-level tanks are almost always under-geared - they haven't had many chances to get good gear yet, and are thus running around in whatever gear they got as quest rewards.
If you then end up with a level 60 DPS with top-end gear who goes all out then they will rip off aggro, even when level-synced. The gear difference will just be too great, even when synced.
I have been there as a low-level tank both pre- and post- the VIT changes and a few times I just could not hold aggro no matter what I did. While I wouldn't consider myself a great tank I do know the basics, and in other runs had few problems.
It is not a universal problem for low-level tanks to hold aggro, but when paired with DPS who have much better gear and who doesn't hold back, it can be very hard for the tank.
It is difficult at times to keep the enemies on you pre-30 on tanks when dealing with synced down DPS, especially with Dragoons, Monks and Ninjas. Their burst can quickly pull the monsters away from you if you don't press hard.
Seen that on Thousand-Maws with my Marauder back then - That was a pain to deal with.
And I had melded HQ gear armor and weapon at the very least, so don't lip me that this has been a gear issue.
I remember levelling my paladin pre nerf and its was a nightmare, had to really bust a gut keeping agro and at that point I was very familiar with the game and it's agro system. Paladins have it hard because they don't get their tank stance till level 40 which is retarded. I don't feel like the nerf needs completely reversed, it needs adjusted slightly but pre 40/50 tank agro generation needs its own separate adjustments.
Actually I was in anti tower and had a i210+ DRK who couldn't keep agro because of the rediculious accuracy required for content, I could feel the anger radiating through my TV, poor tank was busting her ass trying to keep agro but we pulled occasionally. The system needs adjustments ASAP but not completely reverted to pre nerf as that spawned other issues like players rolling full str but not knowing how to actually tank in the first place.
As someone who started playing this game alittle over a week ago, I do notice the 3 situations mentioned before as well. I've been known to tanks in other games. Any decent group I kept aggro most of the time. When people go haywire on all mobs, I could keep hitting flash until my mp was drained more or less. It would have been great if Shield Oath was a level 30 talent, seeing once you have this, the threat issues were gone completely. With more skills (Circle of Scion for example) AoE threat became even more easy.
Do people in this game not know what tab targeting is? Tab target aggro skills on enemies to maintain aggro, it's not hard. I did it in 2.0 and I still do it now. It's easier to tank w/ vit now, the people qqing are just undergeared or don't know how to maintain aggro.
