I have 3 characters for crafting.

I've tried to make an alt a few times and I think the highest I've gotten was about level 15. Trudging through the story again and unlocking various features tends to slow me down (though it doesn't help that I have all the jobs at high levels as that makes it even less of a new experience).
I'd be in favor of ways to make the game more alt-friendly but it's likely that anything they could do to accomplish that would require a lot of development time and/or resources, so we aren't likely to see anything like it soon (but I could be wrong about the amount of work that would be required and wouldn't mind being surprised).
They can't make the game alt-character friendly, if they're incapable of even making it alt-class friendly
Maybe my suggestion isn't the best.
And there are good suggestions for making the game more alt-friendly.
I like the idea of all your characters on the same server going onto the friend's list.
I'd like to make some changes to my suggestion, and also stress again that it is OPTIONAL.
The players that want to continue enjoying the MSQ on their alts will NOT be forced into any action other than simply continuing the MSQ.
If you want to enjoy the MSQ, just keep doing the quests like normal. No gimmicks, no strings attached, it's just you and the MSQ.
The players that don't want to drag through it again have an option to opt-out.
After the first handful of intro quests, just check the "Opt-Out of MSQ" checkbox in the options menu, and viola.
You wont see any MSQ icons floating over NPC heads and all the MSQs will be marked as unobtainable.
Granted, this may require rezoning or, heaven forbid (sarcasm), restarting the game.
If players want to pick up wherever they left off, just uncheck the box, and take a look at the Neverending Journal to see which ones have been completed on that character (if you don't have a clue where you left off).
TLDR Players that want to enjoy the MSQ can do the quests as normal, no action required other than clicking "Accept Quest." Others can Opt-Out without losing overall progress from their main.
I'm curious to read opinions on this... (prepares for hate)
I think it is. It was explained at length back when we were starving for server space and subsequently got new worlds.
Servers lock in one of two ways. First, SE explicitly locks servers against character creation based on the population spread and density in starting zones. Alternately servers can automatically lock themselves based on the population in the zone you are attempting to join - or the total online population on the server. But that depends entirely on the server being available for character creation. Balmung is seldom open for new characters - which is a big part of what I was saying.
Even if it is open forvcharacter creation, if you start a new character as a conjurer and it just happens that Gridania is very busy (or Balmung is very busy as a whole), you'll be told you can't create your character. On a heavily populated server this translates to it being easier to create characters during the least busy times - assuming the server is open to new characters..
So explain why we have so many character slots available per world, then?
I have 5 or 6 chars on Sargatanas, all different classes. I LIKE having to go thru the entire story repeatedly because I always find something I never noticed in the quests the previous times. Plus it makes it a snap to level up the characters without mindless fate/leve grinding. Gawd I loathe that...and I loathe the fact I can't mail unneeded armor or whatever to the ones who could use it. So dumb.
I don't know of any MMOs that let you do this, so im not really sure where this expectation comes from/
A good portion of the player base is NOT in a Free Company.
