I think the OP was more on about a personal issue, not class generic.
To offer a counterpoint, I use Benefic II more than Benefic I in dungeons, because it affords me something more precious than MP, which is time. I can wait longer to heal, and heal tanks up faster, by using Benefic II liberally. Then otherwise I can sit in cleric stance and blast things.
While I respect your playstyle and the fact that it works for you in dungeons, using Benefic II more than Benefic I is MP innefficient imo and in content harder than dungeons it'll be more apparent. At least in raids, you need to save MP as much as possible throughout the whole fight and Benefic II is only used for big hits that need instant healing and you need to save your ED for something soon after or if it's down. If you are waiting longer to heal, in such case ED should be up quickly enough. Perhaps in dungeons it's not that big of a deal but it can become a habit that won't work the same in higher content. OP will probably run into MP issues whenever/if they decide to do harder content than dungeons if they keep this habit. =P
i have not yet heal in Dusk Vigil
but i do found healing Paladin and warrior more comfortable than healing Dark-knight
i dont play deep in tank role, only level those 3 tank to around 40, do feel dark-knight slightly more "paper" then other 2
as for AST vs WHM, i dont feel AST weaker than WHM as long as i m not using Nocturnal Sect
however, i do find it more comfortable with WHM when doing 8 ppl dungeon
I already max my AST to 60 (yay) and tried Expert Roulette. IMO AST HoT is really big if you use Synastry + Aspected Benefic + Aspected Helios + Collective Unconscious (Add Celestial Opposition sometimes), and you put Time Dilation on tank.
There really isn't anything materially different healing DRK, we have comparable cool downs to PLD that can be up for almost every pull. The job has a higher skill ceiling than PLD and that it's main mechanic is managing MP along with cool downs and skills that can be used for mitigation, threat, and DPS. Anyone who is greatly familiar with tanking before is going to have an easier time with the job, compared to a fresh tank that just got their "first" tank job in HW. The latter I think we are seeing a lot more of nowadays, subpar tanks leveling that also have zilch in cross-class skills from GLD/MRDs so missing the two minor cooldowns like Convalenence and Bloodbath which help healers, so not having those can be an annoyance. Then there is the more common gear issue, not even seeing i120+ when they get to Dusk Vigil like they just came straight off of their AF level 50 quest gear, so yeah. Those two stand out to me as I'm leveling my dps jobs.
You can do that easy on SCH with embrace focus macros.
