I wouldn't mind if Blue Mage was given a completely new weapon. The same way they gave DRK a scythe in XI, they could do something for Blue Mage..maybe something like a lantern...hehe.

I would think they could just use various synonyms for sword for different classes.
A quick look resulted in the following possibilities:
bilbo, bill, blade, brand, cutlass, dagger, epee, foil, rapier, scimitar.
For example in XI, BLUs were tied to Kilij type swords:

Therefore it's possible if they did introduce Blue Mage, they can introduce a line of Kilij swords which are designed more for a Blue Mage than a pure melee, i.e it has melee stats but it focuses more on mage stats as well. Otherwise, SE kinda designed themselves into a corner lol.
Since jobs were announced I have always said things like X class + X job like we are getting could be a good idea could be extended to x class + y class = z job, so they could give GLA or MRD a GS and could say either GLA or MRD + THM makes DRK and it could be added to the lore like "the GLA/MRD gets corrupted by the THM's dark magic"
If a tamer class is introduced on its own it would become beastmaster both using a whip, then say GLA and tamer could become BLU, the lore being "the GLA learns the way of the beasts from the tamer" which would open the BLU into using either a sword (Requires BLU) or if you want to look at FFVIII and Quistis could use a whip.
There could be alot they can do with jobs and the armoury system, they just need to do it right.
Observing the new weapons for Gladiator I can see they are truly moving away from the use of daggers in the standard list. It looks like it's mostly broad-bladed slash/thrust weapons (your standard arming sword or short sword for example).
If they were to phase out the goblin scimitar, cobalt shamshir, and aeolian scimitar then they could be rebranded as "sabers" and used in other cases. Of course, I'm not so sure of that considering that those types of weapons go fairly well with the Ottoman-styled Ul'dah where the GLA guild is so it's a somewhat-tricky act there as there is a lore reason (you can all lol now) for not divvying up those weapons. If they were to replace them, that wouldn't be so bad either (the Brass Blades and Sultanasworn aren't GLA, 'nuff said).
The other variety of sword might just be put under "rapier" for, maybe, RDM. You can have a fencer class put in that transitions over into RDM (so a DoW has a class-to-job conversion into a DoM that straddles the line).
Frankly, I have no problems with GLA just keeping the damn knives. It fits well enough that it doesn't blow my mind. Why not just let PGL have a THF-type and NIN-type jobs? They already got the dual-wielding baked into the class. I wouldn't think their existing WS, abilities, and traits would work against a THF and/or NIN jobs later down the line.
As a few people have stated, Jobs may not be restricted to a weapon Class.
My example would be the Bard using: a Bow, a Bow-Harp, a Harp, a Horn, a Flute, and maybe even a Dagger or Sword or Shield.
As stated in here already... http://forum.square-enix.com/ffxiv/t...03-Dark-Knight
From the live letter...
It was also in an interview that Yoshi said they might give GLA greatswords so they have a DPS option. That could lead to a GLA > DRK path.Quote:
Regarding dual-wielding, we're discussing whether we want to implement a class that branches out from the gladiator, or implementing a stealthy scout-type class (e.g. thief) that can perform sneak attacks. If we decide to go with the latter, we may set the job as ninja. The only problem is that gladiators are currently able to equip daggers, but not many rely on them. What we might end up doing is making the dagger available only for the scout-type class and make it able to dual-wield daggers.
Also the thought is that since GLA sword types do not seem to include or I have not seen fencer type swords... they could make a fencer class which would have RDM and such... who knows...
The cat is bemused =-.-=
Why can't certain weapons just be exclusive to certain classes? For instance, we already have daggers, but if SE implements the Thief class, they can also use daggers, but only certain daggers (different design, maybe) that the Gladiator can't use. These daggers can provide certain stat boosts relevant to Thief. We basically have the same thing going on with Conjurer and Thaumaturge....they both use staves and wands, but their weapons look different and stats apply to their respective classes.
