You wouldn't happen to remember how many messages you got for the Pumpkin Orange would you? Regardless, it's good to note that it should be possible to go from Pumpkin to Sunset Orange with one message from apple feeding.

I fed him 21 apples, and I think I started getting a feathers message starting at the fourth or third apple. After that I got it every apple. I'm fairly certain that the message will be spammed as long as the chocobo is growing new feathers though, so there's no way for me to tell how many actual color changes occurred from default.
Friend of mine had a lilac purple and did this.
Starting color: Lilac Purple.
Feed: 1 O'Ghomoro Berry
Messages:
1st Feed - “Chocobo is beginning to grow new feathers!” “Chocobo's plumage will change in 6 hours.”
And ended up with a Lavender Blue.
Instead of the mass feeding I'm going to just feed fatboy 1 apple and see where it takes me from Royal Blue. 1 feeding, 6hrs.. Curious to see how many color levels I move as compared to shoving his face full of berries even though I received the feather msg every time but with little to no jump from color to color over 3 feedings and the last one was nothing.
I would love to contribute to this, and I will do so once my plants finish growing.
Here are some thoughts, I don't have a test to do just yet, more just speculation, but I will soon.
On the initial feed, the color changing process will initiate and you have 6 hours (earth time) to adjust the fruits given to alter the final plumage color. Each subsequent fruit fed will alter the queued colors until a new dye has been matched.
For example:
Let's say your initial values were [R:120 G:100 B:50]
Now, let's assume the color you are trying to reach is [R:165 G:103 B:46]
Let's assume now that each fruit will give a RGB modifier value of 10 either additive or subtractive based on which fruit (lighten or darken) you use.
In order to reach your end goal, you would assumingly need to feed your Chocobo 4 of the darken red fruits for a 40 value increase in red to result in [R:160 G:100 B:50]
Let's now assume that are no colors in between your current color and the color you're trying to achieve, the example log would be something like this.
This change has queued up 4 fruits adding up to +40 red, the server on each fruit fed evaluates the current queued RGB value against the dyes in the game. Once a dye is resolved within the margin of the scale of the fruit (in this case 10) the message that the Chocobos feathers will change will be alerted, indicating that a new dye has been resolved and the RGB value will shift to the resulting values and more fruits can then be queued for subsequent changes.Quote:

The color would then at this point change from [R:160 G:100 B:50] to the final [R:165 G:103 B:46] which is only slightly off enough so that either the rounding margin is close enough to make the match, or that a fruit change would be too much of a variation that would result in a new dye color.
NOTE that this color shift means that it's very possible that you need to go through multiple dyes in order to reach a final dye, as the color shift from the RGB resolving to a certain dye, could potentially skew your results in a way that would make subsequent fruits added to the same RGB value shifted giving seemingly unexpected results.
Alternatively
In line with what people have been speculating on possible RNG based values, it is highly possible that each fruit will give a random increase between 1-10 for example, which may result in you having to feed it extra fruits from what others are recording. This coupled with the color shift can make for planning a difficult color very touchy.
In order to test this theory out, the Chocobo would need to be fed very carefully to ensure the exact number of fruits used is recorded and feeding to be stopped once the Chocobo has been alerted to have their feathers changed. This should be done multiple times back and forth with the same fruits to see if the numbers vary. Is it possible that the initial test was given bad RNG with values like (+3 +2 +4) resulting in +9 while the plum gave a -9 straight off the bat?
I hope this all makes sense, I'd love to hear some ideas on this, I think more tests changing to a certain color and back and recording the number of fruits needed is key in seeing if the fruits provide a static increase, or a random increase in a specific channel.

Everyone posting a color change should state how many "starts to grow new feathers" messages they receive and if they start from Desert Yellow or not. It makes the data easier to processes, considering it's a 6 hour wait. Don't worry about the initial color change message, only "starts to grow new feathers" matter.
