I have been thinking that alchemist should be a combat class. Similar reasons as this. But I'd see it more of a mix of both offense(DoTs or some sort of elemental pots), heal, debuff(paralysis and other pots) and buff(short term buffs to players).
The way I see it I'd go thm as second. And they would gain access to an "aetheric bubble" of some sort that would allow them to have as it where an "infinite stock" of pots - and they would consume MP to access that bubble.

If they changed alchemist to a Disciple of War, they would need to change the name to "Chemist" for continuity's sake. I honestly don't understand why they didn't name it that as a Disciple of the Hand in the first place..
