Seems pretty irrelevant, considering I was talking about the fact that populations were declining pre-abyssea. Besides that, there was a lot of talk in the community that these merges weren't necessary at the time, considering that the servers all had relatively stable populations (I was on Ramuh, didn't see any real need to merge with Bahamut).

I wouldn't say FFXI is a game you should go back to if you're planning to invest time for years to come, but I would say if there's anything you want to do in the game (like play through story missions that were too time consuming or whatever before) then now's the time to do it. It's pretty fun.

I returned for a while but each level felt like a waste as I knew eventually, I'd end up back here. And that was the case, sooner than I thought. I am a graphics whore and XIV just appeals to me to much. And I also did not have time to get stuck into XI.

I don't think it's a waste if you're having fun (not to say you were or weren't, just on the topic of how any gaming isn't really a 'waste' of time), I'd rather wait until I know i'd be having fun with FFXIV and level from scratch, rather than see it as an investment. I've never really understood the attachment people make with games, if I don't enjoy it i'll drop it.

Ok, apologies, I misread your post and thought you were trying to say that there had not been any mergers other than prior to the launch of Abyssea.

I know people were pretty annoyed about the recent mergers; a lot of servers doubling their online numbers from 1800-2000 peak up to 5000-6000 players. But, with half the servers around now than there used to be, it would still suggest to me personally that the population is in decline and the game not in as strong a state now than it used to be. It was like that before I left (I was on Odin)- 85% of the people I used to know are no longer there.
So if half the servers (near as damn it) are gone; the figure of 400K players to 190K players may not actually be as far fetched as it seems ^^ That was my long-winded point lol.

Nope, I'll be done with Square Enix. At least in terms of MMO's. LotrO has a new expansion coming and The Old Republic looks quite good. SE has gotten out of touch. Just grinding for the sake of grinding in a MMO doesn't cut it anymore. Not for me at least.

I tried going back to XI for a few months prior to the CE release of XIV; just after the 2nd Abyssea expansion I believe.

My fiancee and I started new characters together and tried playing it the old school way.. that was a lot of fun until we got to Jeuno. At that point XI totally lost its appeal, the game felt kind of broken I guess.. it just wasn't the same as it was all those years again.

I'd probably play it again if they (which they wouldn't ever) gave XI a Graphical Upgrade AND changed the content back to the Pre-Abyssea days with a few fixes and tweaks here and there.

I attempted not to long ago but found that the graphics made it too hard to look at. If they updated the graphics and maybe adjusted the ui a little bit I would consider going back, but then again I really like the premise behind xiv... I'm waiting for the update, then if I like it, I will look for an LS and maybe settle down on a server.

Abyssea ruined FFXI, I wont be going back to it, I will play other games, along with FFXIV for now.

From what I understand, FFXI is nothing like it was in 2009 and earlier, so for many of us, returning would only ruin our memory of what the game was.

Haha, I see! I guess purely eyeballing, it makes sense.

I'm pretty much messing around on MMOs generally till GW2 comes out, can't wait for that. That said I do really hope FFXIV does well, if it could generate the lasting appeal FFXI had for a good 7 years I'd be all over it, although 7 years from now I'm not sure whether I'd be playing MMOs or not...
