FF14 is it's own game and while there's a good amount of homage and fanfare, they can do what they want to any of the 'original' classes that we're all accustomed to.
@London Fan Fest they already said that "Instead of blocking with a shield there will be more Dodging/Parrying" and "Wield the power of darkness" blah blah blah.
For all of those that didn't play FFXI, DRKs had access to "Spike" spell buffs, which created a kind of shield that activated when the enemy hit you with a physical attack.
Of course a lot of these spells would have to be reworked but some EXAMPLES:
*Dread Spikes = Covers you with magical darkness spikes. Steal HP from enemies that hit you. Ineffective against undead. <- the text for the scroll that lets you learn it
You absorbed X% of HP from the enemy that hit you.
*Fire Spikes = Dealt damage when enemies hit you
*Lightning Spikes = Dealt Damage + Stunned the enemy for 1 sec.
*Ice Spikes = Dealt damage + Paralyze
so on and so forth, it'll be interesting to see how it's done in Heavensward but although I was looking forward to playing it as a DPS I wouldn't mind breaking from my PLD to play DRK, as long as it's not 1 2 3 all over again which I'm pretty sure we can assume it isn't.
IF people are THIS disappointed in the new Tank Class I wonder how they'll react to the new Healer class when they said that "It's NOT going to be what we expected"
