The great streamer Asmongold is joining FFXIV

In the past 38 pages have seen some nice welcoming comments from people but also some very toxic ones. All the negative people should give the guy a break and work on being more accepting of others.

The community should welcome new players and guide them well in-game especially. First impressions do count, imagine if the first time you ran Satasha normal as a Tank you got told you're pulling too slow and got completely disheartened thinking you're in for more of the same harsh criticism going forward?

It would be nice if people's first impressions of the game were welcoming ones as they are more likely to keep the kindness going.

I don't mind people having a different outlook; I have a problem with the claims of neutrality, like they don't understand what will happen if they go into a fan thread for a celebrity and start gaslighting about how he's no big deal. They do it knowing the fans are going to react, then get all flustered and play victim like they didn't expect it.

There's large groups of people online who follow celebrities around all day "not caring" that they exist, and it's so transparent I can't help but comment on it. The obsessed detractors are more annoying than the obsessed fans because at least the fans are honest. If people didn't care they wouldn't be here. The fact is that something about him or his fans bothers them, so they're here gaslighting. I don't have a problem with it but they should just be honest about it, instead of trying to fake neutrality on the subject.

I've had friends asking for wow transmog system. "OH HOW DARE YOU INSULT OUR GLAMOUR SYTEM REEEEEEE" paraphrasing ofc but you get the point.

Hearing how Scottzone was bullied into stopping content creation altogether was pretty disheartening, yeah. Not gonna lie. And it's interesting because even while you're memeing, people are continuing to prove you right. XIV has a problem with severe evangelizing and shutting down dissenting opinion, no matter how valid it may be. It may not have even been anyone in this thread who was responsible for Scottzone's departure, but the fact that it happened to a content creator nowhere near as big as Asmongold should be worrying.

I'm not on the boat that XIV's playerbase is "as toxic as other communities", because it isn't. There is toxicity, but overall, the community is pretty cool, it really is. Though, if we don't start cracking down on the people who take critiques about the game as personal attacks and then lash out at others, the problem is going to fester.

I want people to continue having the impression that XIV's community is warm and welcoming, but the rose-colored lenses need to come off at some point for some of its players. Asmon is a huge streamer and while I get that some people are worried about his following (I am, too), the last thing I want to hear is how he didn't see the welcoming aspect of the community that people so praise us for. It will paint us in a really bad light, because that's a part of our reputation and identity as players of XIV.

If you're in this thread gatekeeping (and you know who you are), you are part of the problem. @ me if you want.

No, the problem happens when trolls go around putting the jealousy token on everyone that doesn't necessarily agree with the outlook. Fans or not, I'm sure it's not a difficult task to act like an adult about it. I'm honestly not entirely sure Asmongold could have made it more abundantly clear about him not viewing it as a special event.

But that doesn't detract from the simple fact that supposed fans of the guy show an utter inability of respecting his wishes of letting him try the game, without having partial responsibility of turning it into anything unpleasant or drama-related. But me not taking particular care in the matter and respecting his wishes apparently comes across as gaslighting, you couldn't be more hyperbolic even if you tried.

Like seriously, the man wants to try a videogame, stop making a big deal about it and let the man play his damn videogame.

Good for you haven't run into to much of the toxic side, and I'd say you don't see it to much in-game but on this forum this week it been pretty clear there exist alot of toxicity towards anyone being a wow streamer and wants to join cause you have a following with some trolls and kids.

What you do see a lot (at least during my 8 years of playing) is "go back to wow" and that sort of condescending comments.

It all boils down to some (many it seem now) bad apples but it gives a bad picture for the community as awhole, same as people say wow is so toxic, over the years i played it (given pretty casual) but I rarely seen anything toxic in it but there is clearly some bad apples there too giving the bad community stamp.

Ah, so your position now is that you're in this thread protecting him from his fans? This thread was just people welcoming him to the game and expressing excitement; it wasn't some insidious plot to swarm him and invade his privacy the second he logged in.

Lets not keep backpeddling and trying to reframe this; you're not here to defend Asmons wishes you're just gaslighting his fans.

I never made that position, you're attempting to misrepresent my position. I feel like I've been quite clear that people should simply respect his wishes and let him enjoy the game to create his own firsthand opinion. This thread has been a mix of things.

No, my original stance was actually that I didn't care and I was wondering why others were too, and that people should let him play the game and see how he does which was in fact a comment to both sides of the coin. Which quickly got turned by someone fairly immature trying to masquerade that everyone is jealous because they aren't conforming to their little parade. But alas I see you make it a well-known point to comment based on incomplete knowledge, so before you try and misrepresent my stance you would in fact do well to do your research beforehand on what my stance was in the first place.

The person being called jealous more or less just came here to announce that Asmon is "nothing special." That was gaslighting, and he got jumped on for it. The problem is that you hitched yourself to his wagon and started attacking the people who jumped on him, so his point by proxy became yours.

Regardless, there's nothing wrong with threads like this, and Asmons "wishes" are just standard celebrity faux modesty. Publicity is his careers lifeblood, and he's probably going to be trying this game on stream; because, you know, he OBVIOUSLY wants to keep this low key and private. /s

The false modesty just keeps him from looking like a douche, and while I'm sure he doesn't want to be harassed in game I doubt he minds his fans talking about him. So, let them make a thread and have their fun, and don't worry; Asmon will get to "just try the game."
