Have seen the same attitude in WoW...
Player A want something that won't affect the gameplay in any way shape or form, nor it being contradictory to lore.
Player B does not want it and as turn will go out of their way to ensure that no one can get it, usually though flooding the forum with faulty argumentation or other means of silencing/drowning out it's opposition.
Also if you shouldn't be allowed to necro threads then they need to be locked x period after last post. And even then there are older topics that might as well be revived so that you don't end up with 200 threads about the same thing.
