It's not really an accurate description for WoW though.
If you really want a good description of WoW's storyline with XIV equivalents it'd be "Yeah we're still dredging up Nidhogg, Hraesvelgr and Ysayle in the literal afterlife cause we need to milk the most successful point of our franchise to no end now that we have no idea how to organically progress the plot in new ways that don't rely on nostalgia bait"
Though this comparison has kinda made me realize how similar Arthas and Estinien are, so maybe it's not too off-base.
Arthas killed an entire kingdom and thought he was in the right all the way to the grave. As far as I know, Estinien hasn't done that (yet).
Arthas' legacy also got ripped apart to try and make a worthless, soulless husk try and have some modicum of a relevant backstory (Sylvanas, if you didn't guess!) and it failed horribly. Even to the point of burning other storylines just to try and make us feel bad for a genocide-crazed lunatic. (That even Blizzard themselves realized was a stupid idea. Mid-Bloody-Expansion.) When the creators don't even want to acknowledge that expansion exists -one single chapter later-, you know somethings wrong.
I'm not saying FF is perfect, mind.. They certainly pushed Zenos' obsession with the WoL a bit much, but at least that felt "in character" rather than forced into our faces.
Too be honest, I kinda like the idea of how obsessive he was and it was entertaining to watch him and Fandaniel be little gremlins in their own ways. It also actually got him to get some actual positive character growth towards the end about it too. At the very least, he was given a wonderful send-off and I seriously hope his death stays that way.
Well I'm not saying it's even comparable in terms of writing quality, just pointing out what a WoW-like XIV expansion would look like lol
As for the Arthas and Estinien thing, I was mostly talking about how they're both "chosen ones" with a single-minded obsession with revenge that leads them down the path of seeking ever higher power through forbidden artifacts which eventually literally consumes them and causes them to raze the kingdom they once fought to protect.
Obviously Arthas is a bit more... unhinged... than Estinien (though even this is arguable given the ARR DRG job quests) but at the end of the day they both do kind of end up in the same place due to similar circumstances. You can even take it a step further and draw parallels between Alberic and Uther.
Imagine a world where people can leave people alone about their literally harmless opinions and let them play the game how they want when it is hurting absolutely no one.
Wew, this thread got really funny really fast. That EW comment really ruffled some feathers, lmao.
